The new red and black Ferrari super-coupe-speed-machine that premiered in Geneva was revealed before the New York International Auto Show to an admiring audience of writers and speed freaks in the brand’s Park Avenue showroom.
The 599xx is not for the faint of heart – average drivers — but could be for the feint of heart – agile, maneuvering professional and semi-pro drivers who really want to win in non-official competitions.
Originally conceived exclusively for track use, but not official competition, it’s therefore unrestricted to the governing rules, regulations and requirements usually associated with vehicles of this ilk.
Powered by a 700-horsepower V12 that can ramp up the revs to 9000 rpm, the 599xx is a techno-speed-monster-marvel.
The R&D engineers in Maranello have created a technological marvel with the combination of aerodynamic, electronic control and handling innovations. Extensive use of weight reducing materials including composites, carbon-fiber and magnesium has achieved the desired weight.
New racing carbon ceramic materials have been used on the brake system that combines with ceramic pads for smaller brakes that are race effective. F1 “doughnuts” cover the brake discs and wheel rims to improve aerodynamics and brake cooling.
Ferrari’s “Actiflow” aerodynamics and technology innovations have added downforce and cut drag in cornering through air flow rechanneling and direction, including rear winglets and jets to control and smooth the air flow and to reduce drag.
The race cockpit incorporates a “virtual car engineer” screen that provides real-time results of the 599xx’s efficiency on the track in race conditions.
Ferrari will be, it was announced, organizing a program of dedicated track events for owners of the 599xx in 2010/2011 as part of the rather expensive, estimated to cost €1 million, Corse Clienti (Client Racing only) division which organizes and runs track events and single-series championships exclusively for Ferrari owners.
