A simple spring is weak, causing a large recall.

The Audi division of Volkswagen of America is recalling more than 10,000 A3, TT and TT roadster cars with “quattro” transmissions because of potential fuel leaks while driving. A3 model years of 2006-2010 are affected, as well as 2008-2010 TT models.

Dealers will not be notified until parts are available.

In response to an inquiry from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Volkswagen Group of America said it identified 110 warranty claims on 96 unique vehicles. Of these, 14 claims contained allegations of fuel leaks, which result in a warranty claim rate of 0.13%. Volkswagen said during driving maneuvers, liquid fuel may enter the fuel tank venting system and migrate into the evaporative system, saturating the carbon canister. Should this occur while driving, the vehicle may experience performance issues such as vehicle jerking, and the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) in the instrument cluster could illuminate.

In rare cases, fuel could leak from the evaporative system. It is feasible that a fire could occur in the cars.

Dealers will replace the fuel tank ventilation valve with an improved valve free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during October 2009. Owners may contact Audi at 1-800-253-2834.

Volkswagen’s recall campaign number is 20Q3/J3. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline AT 1-888-327-4236, or go to  http://www.safercar.gov. (NHTSA campaign number: 09V377000)
