Camry is still the sales leader.

Toyota sales were up 6.8% compared with the year-ago month when Toyota was benefitting from the collapse of Chrysler and General Motors. That was also well before Toyota’s subsequent recall of millions of vehicles for unintended acceleration problems, though, which are now implicated in the deaths of 89 people and the subject of hundreds of lawsuits. Toyota says it has repaired 4 million vehicles for various recalls so far this year, and its Lexus Division is facing at least one more. (See Toyota to Recall 270,000 Lexus Models for Stalling)

American Honda year-to-date sales reached 593,909, an increase of 12.6% versus last year, based on the daily selling rate.

On an industry basis, passenger car sales are flat, with light trucks and fleet sales causing the modest increases. Toyota estimated that the industry grew 7%.

Final numbers from AutoData Corporation show the total industry grew 14% compared to a year ago. YTD the total industry is up 17%.

“Toyota performed well during the first half of the year, despite a difficult economic environment,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief operating officer of Toyota Motor Sales. “Although the entire automotive industry struggled in June as weakening consumer confidence weighed on sales, Toyota maintains its leadership position as the number one retail brand in the industry year-to-date.”

Toyota will pull ahead its annual August national clearance sale – more incentives – to this July. The national safety campaign continues, and the retail incentives are essentially unchanged from the existing ones.

Industry data show that Toyota and Honda are spending about $2,000 per vehicle; the Koreans $2,300; while the Detroit Three are are +$3,000.
