The 5-door version of the Range Rover Evoque will debut at next week's L.A. Auto Show.

Here’s a good look at Land Rover’s new 5-door Range Rover Evoque, a more functional take on the 3-door crossover that the British marque revealed at last month’s Paris Motor Show.

You can check it out in the sheet metal, next week, when it makes its debut at the Los Angeles Motor Show.

There’s been a sudden rush back to the sportier 3-door SUV, a formula popular in earlier years.  But for most potential buyers, 5-doors are simply more efficient, especially if you’ve squeezing kids and cargo into the back seat.

The good news is that the basic shape of the 5-door Evoque maintains the earlier model’s coupe-like shape, though sharp eyes will note a slightly taller roofline to give adults some rear seat headroom.

Evoque, in all its incarnations, is meant to “expand and revitalize the global appeal of the Range Rover marque,” according to Phil Popham, Land Rover’s managing director.

Other than a higher roof line and the extra doors, the 3- and 5-door Evoque models are identical.

The new model is the third to wear the Range Rover badge, alongside the original SUV and the Range Rover Sport.  But Evoque is Land Rover’s first crossover platform, a distinct shift in direction for the British maker, whose products are known for the go-anywhere versatility.

The basic details of the 5-door closely match up with the 3-door, including the global range of 4- and 6-cylinder engines, which will power both front and all-wheel-drive configurations.

Company officials claim the Evoque will be able to match the traditional Range Rover’s off-road capabilities on all but the most rugged trails.  The new model will maintain the brand’s Terrain Response system, which will allow a user to simply turn a knob to set everything from suspension to throttle to gearbox to performance optimally for different road conditions.  An optional MagneRide suspension will be offered.

The Range Rover Evoque is the first crossover platform for Land Rover - and the first to offer a front-drive configuration.

Pricing is expected to start in the low to mid-$50,000 range.  The 3-door is planned to reach global markets first, followed shortly after by the new 5-door Range Rover Evoque.
