General Motors announces it has developed a method to convert oil-soaked, plastic absorbent booms floating in the Gulf of Mexico into parts for the Chevrolet Volt. The combination of these materials (l to r): recovered boom material, shredded and densified boom material, post consumer plastic and recycled tires from GMÕs Milford Proving Ground Ð pictured here at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant Monday, December 20, 2010 – can be combined to create airflow management components for the Volt. GM estimates it will save more than 100 miles of boom material off the Alabama and Louisiana coasts from the nationÕs landfills. The ongoing project is expected to create enough parts to supply the vehicleÕs first production run. (Photo by John F. Martin for General Motors)
