Tata Technologies, part of the Indian conglomerate producing the little Tata Nano, is looking to hire 100s of Detroit engineers.

Tata Technologies, a subsidiary of India’s Tata Group, plans to hire 400 engineers by the end of the year at its technical center near Detroit to help with engineering projects for car makers in North America.

Dan Saad, Tata Technologies’ director of communications in North America, said the Indian firm is looking at candidates with engineering, design and in product lifecycle management experience.

“The 400 positions are currently open in our HR database to be filled by January 3 that are a result of new automotive program work our engineering and our PLM/Consulting groups have won over the past
months,” Saad said.

“The positions are at automotive client sites – about 80% in metro Detroit, about 20% elsewhere in the U.S. We have about 500 employees in the U.S. now, and about 350” are assigned to the company’s Novi, Michigan offices, he said..

Tata’s announcement follows on the heels of word that General Motors Corp. is looking to hire 1,000 engineers over the next two years, while Chrysler has added 1,000 employees at its technical center in Auburn Hills, in recent months, and is planning to hire additional personnel, both to handle engineering projects and to help the company prepare for an initial public offering of stock during the second half of 2011..

Over the years, a number of international automakers have set up engineering operations in the Detroit suburbs, including both Nissan and Hyundai.  Toyota has significantly expanded its own operations, recently, adding a large test center near Ann Arbor.

Makers like Tata are, in many cases, tapping into a wealth of engineering talent made available as Detroit’s Big Three have pared back their own operations.  But, with GM, Ford and Chrysler all showing signs of recovery, top talent could soon be in high demand.

Tata Technologies, founded in 1989, provides on Engineering Services Outsourcing, Product Development and IT services to the global manufacturing industry.   Headquartered in Singapore, with regional headquarters offices in the United States, India and the United Kingdom, Tata claims to be one of the world’s fastest-growing engineering services  companies.

The company is part of India-based  Tata Group, which reported 2008-09 revenues of $70 billion, of which 61 percent came from business outside India. The group employs more than 350,000 people worldwide.

Tata’s automotive operations are targeting fast growth in the company’s home market – but also hoping to push beyond India’s boundaries.  Last year, the maker acquired both Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford Motor Co., and is using those brands to help it get experience marketing to global buyers.
