Acura is set to announce an updated version of its TL sedan at the Chicago Auto Show.

Many pundits would argue that Acura’s design studio has sort of lost its way with its recent designs, but next month’s Chicago Auto Show could be a chance for the automaker to change course.

Acura will show a “newly refined” 2012 TL at its press conference, scheduled for Feb. 9.

“The TL … further enhances its position in the segment with aggressive, yet refined styling and performance,” said Jeff Conrad, vice president of Acura sales.

The current car has been controversial from the day it was introduced prior to the 2009 model year. Sales have been lackluster, as well.

As for performance upgrades, the TL is likely to get powertrain improvements, including the six-speed transmission from the MDX and ZDX. Could a more fuel-efficient powertrain option, such as a hybrid be in the offing as well?

Still, the TL is Acura’s second-bestselling model behind the MDX with 34,000 sales in 2010.
