Chevrolet aims to get a lot of buzz with the new Bumblebee Camaro, which it hopes will ride the wave as one of the summer movie season’s anticipated blockbusters, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon, rolls into theaters across the country.
The black-and-gold Camaro honors Bumblebee, one of the Autobots from the Tranformers series, which can readily transform themselves from cars to fighting machines in the seeming blink of an eye. The good news is that you don’t have be Shia Labeouf to drive one.
The 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro starts out as either a Camaro 2LS or 2SS with the RS Appearance Package. Cough up another $3,000 and you’’ get not only Bumblebee’s exterior color scheme but a special rear spoiler, black-out 20-inch alloy wheels with Autobot logo center caps, and fender-mounted Autobot badges.
You can also opt for 21-inch black-painted wheels – like the ones on-screen – and a special ground-effects package.
The interior of the Transformers Camaro shares the same color scheme, with black leather contrasted by yellow stitching – and Autobot logos on the headrests and center console.
Fans of the Transformers series will be able to start lining up on Wednesday for Dark of the Moon, the third installment in the series being offered in 3D. The first film in the series, released in 2007, helped set up the return of the Camaro after a long absence from the market.
With the second film, the Transformers franchise has already generated $1.5 billion in worldwide box office revenues, so Chevrolet planners are betting they’ll get another big send-up for the Camaro, which last year pushed past rival Ford Mustang to become the nation’s best-selling pony car.
Chevy will start taking orders for the 2012 on Friday, but the first Bumblebee Camaros won’t roll into showrooms until September. Perhaps you can ask an Autobot to deliver one a little quicker?
