Ford is gauging interest in an ST-badged version of the subcompact Fiesta.

While Ford has been signaling for some time its plans to offer a performance-oriented version of its global compact, the Focus ST, the maker dropped a surprise during the Frankfurt Motor Show, announcing a second model to wear the new performance badge, the Fiesta ST.

Though no formal launch date has been set, the maker will use the Frankfurt preview – and subsequent auto show appearances – to “begin teasing enthusiasts around the world” and gauge their response to the sporty subcompact, said Jost Capito, Ford’s global director of performance vehicles.

In concept trim, the Fiesta ST sports a 1.6-liter version of the makers EcoBoost engine, hear producing about 180 horsepower.  It is mated to a 6-speed stick.

The Ford Fiesta ST Concept can make 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds and top out near 140 mph.

The ST badge is expected to become Ford’s global performance marque, a replacement for the States-centric SVT.  Company officials suggest it could appear on a wide range of global models, all part of the maker’s so-called One Ford strategy.

On the subcompact, he ST would follow on earlier performance derivatives, such as the Fiesta XR2 and Fiesta RS Turbo.

“The Fiesta has a rich history of high-performance models so a new ST performance model is a next logical next step in our performance vehicle strategy for our global small cars,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development.

The show car is based off the 3-door version of the latest Ford Fiesta.  Considering the hatchback has become the dominant body style in both Europe and the U.S., it is considered likely that it would be used if and when the Fiesta ST comes to market, rather than the sedan version of the subcompact.

As with the Focus ST, Ford is hoping to use motorsports to help enhance the image and appeal of the Fiesta ST.  The maker is using the WRC, or World Rally Car, series to prove out the performance potential of both the Fiesta and the EcoBoost engine.

Initially, Ford launched the turbocharged engine line with an emphasis on fuel economy, boasting that the original V-6 version could deliver the mileage of a six and the performance of an eight.  Now, however, Ford is pushing to give EcoBoost a more muscular image in everything from the Fiesta to the big F-Series pickup.

The 1.6-liter engine will be able to launch the Fiesta ST from 0 to 100 kmh (0 to 62.5 mph) in less than 7 seconds, with a rated top speed of 220 kmh, or about 138 mph.

Ford hints that the concept’s suspension has also been given a more rally-like tuning, though it hasn’t disclosed specific details.

Should the Fiesta ST click with potential buyers, insiders suggest it could make its way to market before the 2014 model-year.
