We’ve had a great time watching the entries roll in for our first Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest.  Each day seems to bring a few new ones that are wilder and wackier than before.  So, we’ll continue to share some of the best entries.

For those who’ve somehow missed the news, we’re running a contest asking readers to share the crazy street signs they spot across the country — and around the world. Indeed, there seems to be a couple patterns developing, as you can see with the first photo submitted by reader George Santulli.  We’re not sure if there’s a direct link but the smaller the community the bigger the sense of humor seems to be the pattern.

Have an image of your own? Or maybe you want to run out and snap a shot of that sign you pass going to work every day. The good news is that you’ve still got plenty of time to enter.  The contest runs through August 17 and we’ll then ask readers to help us judge the best, with winners announced over the Labor Day holiday.  To add some motivation, prizes include a $500 Bridgestone tire gift certificate. In the meantime, here are some of the most recent entries in TheDetroitBureau.com’s Wild, Weird and Wacky Street Signs Contest!

As we mentioned, there do seem to be some sort of patterns showing up, and a number of readers have weighed in with shots from small towns that want to stand out.

Most folks like to think of small towns as nice, easy going places where the pace of life moves a little slower.  One can only hope the stress levels are relaxed in Clinton, on the South Island of New Zealand.  Apparently, it’s a place where you just might stay for good, says reader Doug Gurnett.

Then there was this odd entry from reader Robert Cummings.  Should we call this an “un-sign”?  “We took the picture while traveling to Cedar Breaks National Monument outside of Panguitch, Utah,” he adds, offering the possible explanation that many tourists seem to confuse local Route 143 with U.S. Highway 89.  Let’s hear it for helpful road crews.

Another pattern showing up comes from Asia where there seems to a love of English – though not necessarily for the proper use of the language.  Robert McNeice has submitted some delightfully confusing entries, including this from Thailand.  We can only wonder what was in the water before they added H2O.

Lots of readers have been submitting confusing road signs, but this one from Linda Schenck really makes us scratch our heads trying to figure out what lane goes where.  “This sign, she helpfully explains, “is located at the intersection of Tallmadge Rd, Bailey Rd, W. Howe Rd., Northwest Ave., Brittain Rd. and Howe Ave. in Tallmadge, Ohio.” We can only hope the service station with the small ad at the bottom right also offers maps.

Most of the signs the highway department puts up are meant to be serious.  Humor is usually not part of the job description – at least not intentionally.  But it seems that the folks in Windsor, Ontario have a bit of a thing for puns.  We got a charge out of this sign for Electricity Drive submitted by Rick Farrand.
