The 2013 Mazda CX-9 adopts the maker's latest Kodo design language.

Mazda is rapidly replacing the older members of its line-up, introducing a sophisticated new design language while also rolling out the new, high-mileage SkyActiv technology.  Next up for a major makeover is the 2013 Mazda CX-9.

The new crossover will make its debut at the upcoming Australian International Auto Show, in Sydney, but should reappear on this side of the Pacific soon after that mid-October preview.

The most notable update for 2013 is the switch from Mazda’s earlier Nagare design language – which seemed to give the maker’s products an exaggerated smile – to the newer, sleeker Kodo language first seen in concept form at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show.

The result is less of a happy face, perhaps, but the 2013 Mazda CX-9 appears more sculpted and dynamic.  The traditional Mazda grille frame now appears to pierce the headlamp cluster – which for 2013 sees the addition of new daytime running lamps.  The new foglamps are anchored in more pronounced housings that flare up from the front bumper.

Mazda emphasizes that its new SkyActiv concept is more than just a high-mileage powertrain.  It is more of a clean paper approach to all aspects of automotive design, down to lightweighting the lug nuts.  But how much SkyActiv has gone into the CX-9 is unclear.  It does not appear that the powertrain has been directly revised to reflect the new technology.

The 2013 Mazda CX-9 maintains the old model’s 3.7-liter V-6 and 6-speed transmission, with the package offered in both front and all-wheel-drive configurations.

We’ll have to wait for more details to be released in Sydney to find out if elements of SkyActiv can be found in other aspects of the new CX-9’s design.

Mazda does note the 2013 CX-9 will get a number of new high-tech safety features including Forward Obstruction Warning System and Lane Departure Warning.
