Lexus updates the LF-LC hybrid supercar concept for the 2012 Australian Motor Show.

Lexus officials continue to suggest that the LF-LC concept won’t simply disappear like the typical show car – and the latest hint comes from “Down Under,” an updated version of the hybrid supercar making its debut at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.

Inspired by the native semi-precious stone found in Outback, the updated LF-LC has been painted an “Opal Blue,” while the interior also gets a few new updates for its latest appearance, including a new touchscreen system that replaces the earlier joystick-operated infotainment system.

The luxury arm of Toyota has also revealed specifics about the underlying powertrain – which it dubs the Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive.  We’ve been hearing about a new gas-electric driveline that would overcome limits of the original Lexus system – basically the same hybrid technology that first appeared in the original Toyota Prius a dozen years ago.

Lexus reveals the updated hybrid drive system on the LF-LC makes 500 hp, more than any of the maker's other hybrids.

The IC side relies on a gasoline powertrain running on the energy-efficient Atkinson Cycle. That’s mated to a pair of electric motors drawing power from a new lithium-ion battery pack. The combined system turns out 372 kilowatts, or 500 horsepower.  By comparison, the larger and heavier Lexus LS 600h turns out a mere 438 hp.  How much comes from which part of the system, however, Lexus isn’t saying.

Nor is Lexus releasing performance numbers — but when you consider the big LS hybrid can launch from 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds one can only assume the light and aerodynamic LF-LC would slash that number down to something at or under the 4-second mark.

Senior Lexus officials in the U.S. have repeatedly told TheDetroitBureau.com that the brand is looking for a new supercar to replace the now out-of-production LFA. And they hint that at last “some” elements of the new LF-LC will “influence” future models.

“For decades, Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid drivetrains, superior build quality, comfort and reliability,” echoes Australian Lexus chief Tony Cramb. “With the LF-LC we now reinforce our design and technology credentials. The LF-LC is absolutely stunning. Its good looks mask some very exciting design and engineering innovations that will influence Lexus vehicles in the future.”

The latest incarnation of the LF-LX went on display at the Australian International Motor Show over the weekend, the event running through October 29th.
