Infiniti is adding a third gas-electric model to its line-up with the New York Auto Show introduction of the new QX60 Hybrid.
For those who still haven’t quite gotten a grip on the Nissan luxury brand’s new names, the QX60 is the badge the old JX35 is adopting as Infiniti products migrate to its new, global nomenclature. The single “Q” is reserved for passenger cars, a “QX designates a crossover or SUV.
The three-row QX60 Hybrid is powered by a supercharged 2.5-liter gasoline engine paired to a 15 kilowatt electric motor, their combined output of an estimated 250 horsepower is routed through a CVT gearbox. Regenerative power is stored in a compact lithium-ion battery pack.
The drivetrain is based on the system already in use in the Infiniti M35 Hybrid. (The luxury maker also plans to add a hybrid version of its all-new Q50 – the replacement for its old G line.) The system, dubbed the Direct Response Hybrid, uses a novel one-motor/two-clutch design that parent Nissan claims will deliver better fuel economy than older hybrid systems.
In this case, the Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is expected to yield 26 mpg in the EPA’s Combined driving cycle, a 24% improvement over the conventionally powered seven-passenger crossover. If the feds agree, it would become the highest-mileage CUV in its segment.
The lithium battery, incidentally, is stored under the third-row seats and has no impact on seating or cargo space, according to Infiniti.
“The new QX60 Hybrid’s inspired technology, including its compact design, offers the benefits of a hybrid without the usual space and performance compromises – something that we believe will be extremely appealing to buyers,” said Infiniti General Manager Ben Poore.
Along with the new hybrid system, Infiniti has been able to boost the QX60 Hybrid’s mileage with the use of aerodynamic details such as its front underbody spoiler, and integrated rear spoiler and rear tire deflectors.
Meanwhile, the crossover’s 7-inch color information display adds several screens of new information showing hybrid usage and charge regeneration. The approach is intended to help motorists find the best ways to drive to further improve their mileage.
While the maker hasn’t announced pricing for the 2014 QX60 Hybrid, it did reveal that the Q50 sedan will start at $36,450, with a fully loaded model pushing the numbers to $44,750. Add another $905 for delivery fees. The sport sedan will reach U.S. showrooms over the coming summer.
