The iPhone has become an integral part of life for many folks these days, so perhaps it should come as no surprise it will soon “become an integrated component” in what Volkswagen has dubbed the iBeetle which is making its debut this coming weekend at the Shanghai Motor Show.
The modified Bug will feature a specially developed app and docking station and serves as a preview of new versions of the Beetle and Beetle Convertible that Volkswagen plans to launch early next year.
Motorists will either be able to link their iPhone and iBeetle through an app or the special docking station to access a range of infotainment features, including navigation, hands-free calling, music and more, Volkswagen says.
Among the initial iPhone apps that the iBeetle can handle are:
-
The music service Spotify, which can stream live music or play a customized playlist;
- A new function dubbed “Expert” that offers five driving functions that include a compass, chronometer, G-meter for measuring lateral acceleration and engine oil and temperature readouts;
- Reader, which translates Facebook and other social media text to voice;
- Photo, which can post pics to social media sites;
- Postcard, which can keep friends apprised of your location while driving; and
Milestones, which awards virtual “milestone stickers” as a motorist completes special tasks.
The new iBeetle will come with other custom features, VW notes, including unique 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome mirror housings and side trim panels, black door sill plates with the iBeetle logo, and other details. The coupe and convertible will be offered in several Apple-inspired colors, including Candy White and Black Monochrome.
Yeah this should be a great driver distraction leading to more accidents and lawsuits. I hope the lawyers start suing the car makers for gross negligence because adding all of these driver distractions in and effort to create sales to the driving and socially challenged should come at a very high price that serves as an incentive to use better judgment, IMO.
