GM introduced its full-size SUV lineup for 2015 in a bi-coastal event, CFO Dan Ammann shown here at the Chevrolet portion of the bi-coastal event, in New York.

General Motors went to extremes – with simultaneous news conferences in Los Angeles and New York – to pull the wraps off its all-new full-sized sport-utility vehicles Thursday.

The timing of the announcements, which spotlighted the completely new 2015 versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, couldn’t be better considering the surge in demand for full-sized trucks as the U.S. economy rebounds.

Set to reach dealer showrooms next spring, GM hopes to deliver big sales bumps – confounding those who had thought that rising energy prices would deliver a knockout punch to big trucks. It should help that all four models are expected to deliver significant improvements in fuel efficiency, along with other improvements.

The 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe improved passenger convenience with an influx of USB and power ports.

GM dominates the segment with 74% of the market. So far in 2013, Chevrolet and GMC have sold 125,000 Chevrolet Tahoes and Suburbans and GMC Yukons and Yukon XLs, over competitors, such as the Nissan Armada and Toyota Sequoia.

“The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban will continue to be dominant forces in the marketplace and provide great value for our customers, Chevrolet and General Motors,” said Dan Ammann, GM executive vice president and CFO, in New York. “This is an important and profitable segment and we have set the bar high to ensure we provide our customers with great quality and performance they expect and deserve.”

New York and Los Angeles – the host cities for the events – are certainly different and so too are Chevrolet and GMC’s vehicles. Chevy’s Tahoe and Suburban are typically seen as capable haulers; however, the division is looking to enhance their reputations for 2015.

“There are several new features and enhancements at the core of the all-new 2015 Suburban and Tahoe that will extend the legacy Chevrolet has built as the segment leader,” Tim Mahoney, Chevrolet global chief marketing officer, said in New York. “Customers will experience greater refinement, efficiency and safety with the same capability that has made Chevrolet the go-to brand for full-size SUVs,” he said.

The all-new Suburban marks the 80th anniversary and 12th generation of the original SUV. This generation has been designed for today’s active families needing space for everyone and everything.

Chevy says Tahoe offers up to 12 charging locations — as many as six USB ports and six power outlets, including a 110-volt, three-prong outlet for household-level current.

The 2015 Yukon Denali XL made its debut today in Los Angeles.

Tahoe and Suburban also incorporate new technologies, including forward collision alert, front park assist, lane departure warning, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and adaptive cruise control. Chevrolet’s Safety Alert Seat is also available and offers directional vibrations to alert the driver about potential crash threats.

In Los Angeles, Tony DiSalle, vice president of GMC Marketing, pointed to Yukon’s primary difference: styling and luxury. He noted an influx of bold styling changes and advanced technologies – focused on safety and security – will characterize Yukon and Yukon XL’s greater capability.

“We’ve engineered the Yukon and Yukon XL from the ground up, building on a strong legacy of capability to take them to the top of the segment with exceptional refinement and purposeful technology,” said DiSalle. “And when it comes to the tasks people rely on a full-size SUV for, they do it better than ever – and with more style.”

Yukon and Yukon XL share design, architectural and powertrain elements, but Yukon XL has an approximately 14-inch longer wheelbase and is approximately 20 inches longer overall, providing greater legroom for third-row passengers and almost twice the cargo room behind the third-row seat. While the vehicles are very similar there are some differences, in particular, in how they’re used.

“Versatility and spaciousness are valued by customers for both vehicles, but the Yukon XL is the choice for families with more children and those with lifestyles that require its unique combination of passenger- and cargo-hauling capabilities,” he said. “In fact, Yukon XL owners are more than twice as likely to transport passengers daily in the third-row seat.”

All-new styling also advances the Tahoe and Suburban’s design. The result is a quieter ride. A more-efficient, direct-injected EcoTec3 powertrain coupled with improved aerodynamics are expected to result in class-leaded highway fuel economy based on GM testing while preserving overall performance and capability. Official EPA estimates are not yet available, Mahoney said.

“The designs of the all-new Tahoe and Suburban reflect their greater functionality, technology and refinement, forging a new presence for Chevrolet SUVs that’s conveyed with unmistakable brand heritage,” said Ken Parkinson, executive director of design.

Pricing for the vehicles was not available.
