Mercedes will give a first glimpse of the big coupe concept at its Frankfurt stand on Tuesday.
It’s a concept most motorists can appreciate, even if the price of admission is beyond the reach of all but the most select of buyers. Mercedes is dropping the base cost of its new 2014 S-Class line by nearly 3% even as it significantly expands the content level of the big sedan update.
Mercedes is making a lot of S-Class news this week, it turns out, the maker also bringing a new Coupe Concept version to the Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2-door expected to soon reappear in production trim as the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CL.
Facing increased competition from both German and Asian manufacturers, Mercedes clearly intends to flex its muscles in the premium luxury segment with S-Class sedan which it first previewed over the summer. As TheDetroitBureau.com noted in its review, the 2014 remake is a technical tour de force with everything from near-autonomous driving capabilities to the hot stone-style massaging rear seat.
The S-Class Coupe Concept is expected to reappear in the form of the next-generation Mercedes-Benz CL.
While you can run up the price tag quite quickly with all the available options, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S550 debuts at $92,500, a full 2.8%, or $2,100, below the price tag of the 2013 model – before adding in a $925 destination fee. Add the all-wheel-drive 4Matic option and the sedan jumps to $95,900.

The new sedan delivers 20 more horsepower than the outgoing model, as well as such “base” niceties as its keyless start, LED headlamps, rearview camera and panoramic sunroof.
“Every time we introduce a new generation, we have the opportunity to deliver more power, greater efficiency and unmatched safety, backed with an improved value proposition,” boasted Steve Cannon, President and CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA. “Not only is the new S-Class the most intelligent car on the road, it’s also a smart choice.”

For those who want maximum performance – with 577 horsepower under the hood — and virtually every option available, the 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG 4Matic model comes in at $139,000.
Mercedes lops 3% off the 2014 S-Class base price.
Look for the S550 to reach U.S. showrooms in October, followed by the S550 4Matic a month later. The S63 AMG 4Matic also rolls in this coming November.
Mercedes isn’t yet saying what the timing will be for the next-gen CL but we may hear more at the Frankfurt news conference where we’ll get our first close look at the S-Class Coupe Concept.
