The Nissan Rogue is the company's second-best selling vehicle.

Nissan offered up the first glimpse of the 2014 Nissan Rogue, which goes on sale in November and is one of the first of two vehicles built off a common architecture that will be used both by Nissan and its French partner Renault. The automaker debuted the new crossover in both Frankfurt, Germany and at its technical center in Farmington Hills, Mich.

Scott Shirley, marketing manager, said the new Rogue was designed specifically to compete with vehicles such as  the Toyota RAV4, the Ford Escape and Honda CRV in what is considered one of the fastest growing segments in the automobile industry.

The compact crossover segment has grown rapidly in recent years and is expected to continue growing beyond is current level of 1.8 million units annually, added Shirley, who said the base price for the new Rogue is $22,490.

Popular features such as Nissan Connect, a suite of safety features such as lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, moving object detection and a power liftgate, as well as a sunroof, third row of seats and all-wheel are all optional, he said after the official Rogue unveiling at Nissan North American Technical Center in Farmington Hills.

Since it was first introduced for the 2008 model year, the Rogue has become Nissan’s second-most popular vehicle after the Altima by addressing the functional and emotional needs of the buyers while offering great value, according to Pierre Loing, vice president of product development.

“Rogue is a vehicle that helps organize everyday activities and does it with style,” Loing said, noting the Rogue is equipped with a 2.5-liter engine that produces 170 horsepower and 175 foot pounds of torque as well an estimated 28 miles per gallon.

With its complete second-generation redesign, the all-new 2014 Nissan Rogue is set to challenge convention with bold emotive styling, a comfortable interior versatility and an enhanced list of technical features, he said.

The Rogue’s exterior styling adds a new premium look with sharp lines, offering a sporty and confident appearance. Exterior highlights include halogen headlights with signature LED daytime running lights, muscular front fenders and hood, body color outside mirrors with standard integrated turn signals and rear spoiler.

Also available are LED headlights with auto levelizer, fog lights, privacy glass, roof rails, heated outside mirrors, power panoramic moonroof and a power rear liftgate. Wide-opening rear doors provide improved entry and exit, compared with the previous generation Rogue for rear passengers. Rogue is offered in eight exterior colors, including new Midnight Jade and Saharan Sun.

On the inside, the Rogue is designed to make everyday activities a little easier and in style. Rogue’s ample interior roominess offers available seven-passenger seating with the optional stadium-style, flat-fold third row 50/50-split bench seat, Loing said.

Rogue also offers the advanced Divide-N-Hide® Cargo System providing 18 adjustable variations between the cargo and occupant areas (two-row models).

“In Europe, you don’t have as many car’s per household, a car must do everything. So we put a lot more a lot more emphasis on the back,” Loing said.

The Divide-N-Hide system creates a flat cargo area. When more space is needed for carrying taller or bulkier items, lowering the floor board creates a deeper cargo well. And, with the divider board in the vertical position, a split storage area space is created for containing items such as grocery bags

Standard Rogue interior features include “zero gravity”-inspired front seats (using technology first applied to the Nissan Altima’s front seats), six-way adjustable driver’s seat, four-way adjustable front passenger seat, front center console, power windows with driver’s auto up/down, five-inch center color display, audio system with auxiliary audio input jack, power door locks with auto-locking feature, RearView Monitor and a Bluetooth hands-free phone system through “NissanConnect.”
