The much-anticipated 50th anniversary Ford Mustang is now scheduled to make its official debut with a special global launch event on Dec. 5 that will include synchronized showings in Dearborn, Mich., Los Angeles, Sydney, Shanghai and Barcelona.
Jim Farley, Ford executive vice president, said Mustang’s unique iconic value has led to the company to organize the official reveal as a special event with a 15-day countdown leading up to the fifth of December.
“We’re going to be doing this globally,” said Farley, who noted the reveal will also make heavy use of social media.
“Mustang has more than 5 million followers on Facebook,” he noted. “It was pretty natural to look at the platforms of Facebook and Instagram. We have to respect the community.”
Farley said Ford has nurtured movie tie-ins with a new film, “The Need Ford Speed.”
“The Mustang launch is really about Ford,” he said. “It’s a special time at Ford. Finally Ford has finally arrived. We want to be relevant to the part of the customer (base) that hasn’t necessarily (thought) of Ford first time,” he said. Farley added one of the things that Ford has learned is that Mustang, while considered an iconic American sports car, has a huge following outside the U.S.
Farley also said Ford will be making use of Instagram, the social media site for sharing photos, during the Mustang launch.

“We want to get all these great ideas of pictures of Mustangs from smart phones. The goal is to start a wider conversation about Mustang,” he said.
“The ubiquity of smart phones with cameras has made it possible. You can tell meaningful stories in 15 seconds. It’s not about filters, it’s about telling stories,” said Matt Jacobsen of Instagram, who appeared at the press conference with Farley to announce the partnership.

“This is a whole new vernacular of telling stories through pictures,” he said. “It’s about things that inspire us. It’s a very inspirational platform. No one knows how this happens. It just evolves.”
For all the hoopla, this model better be damn good or it’s going to be a huge disappointment.
