Subaru celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Legacy sedan by unveiling a new Legacy “concept” vehicle that, as expected, distances the stalwart from its sedate styling of the past, but is also closer to production than pure concept.
Tomohiko Ikeda, executive vice president of product development at Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industry, said that the concept “demonstrated the future” of where the Legacy sedan will be going.
It was a sentiment later seconded by Michael McHale, Subaru’s chief spokesman, described the aggressive new design as “indicative” of the styling expected of next generation Legacy.
The Legacy has been a solid performer for Subaru, but the styling lags the competition, a factor that isn’t lost on Subaru executives who acknowledge the staid design may be keeping it off the shopping lists of some buyers.

The trend among automakers lately has been to roll concepts out that are really just a half step away from being production vehicles, think Lincoln’s current MKZ or some of Honda’s recent introductions.

However, in this case, it may be safe to assume that the Legacy that finally hits the streets will be a little tamer featuring a slightly shorter body and higher roof than the sporty concept, among other things, but the notably more aggressive grille and the overall feel of the coupe-like sedan will carry into production.
There sure is a trend to really FUGLY front end styling with fish gills…
