Chevrolet offers just a tease of the new 2015 Corvette Z06 debuting next month in Detroit.

Chevrolet will up the ante for sports car performance when it unveils the new 2014 Corvette Z06 at the Detroit Auto Show next month.

Regular readers might be scratching their heads and wondering about the name of the new supercar as rumors had been circulating in recent months suggesting that for the 2015 iteration Chevy would upgrade the name of the Corvette spin-off by redubbing it the Z07.

Apparently not, and we’ll be looking to find out why when we meet with company officials in the coming weeks, but there’ll be a lot of other questions to ask about the 2015 Corvette Z06 including performance specifics.

For now, Alan Batey, senior vice-president, Global Chevrolet, will only boast that, “No other manufacturer will be able to match the breath of performance cars from Chevrolet,” a reference not only to the various ‘Vette versions but also the new Camaro Z28 and Chevy SS models just coming to market.

So, what might we expect from the 2015 Z06? Considering all the misinformation that has been circulating in recent months, we’ll play it cautious and simply report on what seem to be the more intriguing bits of speculation, including signs that will the performance model will get even more technically sophisticated, starting with a twin-turbo V-8, the folks at Car & Driver have suggested, will have a displacement of “significantly less than 6.2 liters.”

That’s not entirely a surprise.  Earlier in the development of the Corvette, project chief Taedge Juechter told TheDetroitBureau.com that the maker had considered alternative to the “base” car’s traditional powertrain strategy before eventually sticking with the big, naturally aspirated V-8 under the hood making as much as 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

Indeed, Cadillac recently adopted a twin-turbo V-6 package for the new 2014 CTS V-Sport – though the upcoming CTSv, the maxxed-out version of the new luxury sedan, is likely to return to a V-8, very possibly with forced induction of some form.

What matters, if C&D is right, is the 95-horsepower jump the rumored powertrain package would deliver over the current Z06, the new 2015 model reportedly coming in at an even 600 hp.  To put that in perspective consider that the last version of the Z01 was punching out “just” 638 ponies.

Oh, and don’t think the new Z06 is the end-all, be-all Corvette.  A new ZR1 is in the works, Juechter explaining that Chevy has learned a lot from rivals like Porsche and will steadily roll out Corvette variants over the course of the C-7, or seventh-generation, model’s lifecycle.

The first of these, the Corvette Convertible, will make its sales debut early next year.

One thing’s clear, demand for the C-7 has launched even faster than the 2-seater can hit 60.  According to a new report from Cars.com, only the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models are in shorter supply on dealer lots.  And that’s by a hairsbreadth considering there are, on average, just 8 days supply of the Corvette around the U.S. right now compared to an industry norm 60.

With the addition of the convertible and the subsequent Z06 launch, expect the Bowling Green plant to remain busy for some time to come.
