Mercedes revives the S-Class Coupe badge for the 2015 2-door flagship.

A month before it makes its official debut at the annual Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz is offering us a first official look at the next-generation S-Class Coupe.

The 2-door version of the maker’s flagship passenger car line adopts a more athletic stance but one that also shows off even more “bling” than the S-Class sedan – with one of the options including the use of 47 Swarovski crystals in each of the headlamps.

As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”, suggests Ola Källenius, the Daimler AG board member overseeing sales and marketing for Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupe marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S-Class Coupe virtually unaltered. The large coupe has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the ‘S-Class’ again.”

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe will be powered by a 4.7-liter biturbo V-8 making 449 hp.

Mercedes had tried to separate coupe and sedan with the previous generation, renaming the S-Class Coupe the CL line.

The athletic elements of the new S-Class Coupe are more than skin deep.  The new 2-door puts into production a concept Mercedes has been tinkering with on several concept cars in recent years – and which could eventually show up on other production models.  The curve tilting function allows the Coupe to lean into bends, Mercedes explains, “in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly.”

The curve tilting function adds to what is already a huge list of high-tech performance, creature comfort and safety features first seen on the 2014 S-Class sedan.  Among the so-called “Intelligent Drive” systems are Pre-Safe braking with pedestrian detection, Collision Prevention Assist Plus and infrared Nigh View Assist Plus. Like the sedan, the 2105 Mercedes S-Class Coupe will be able to stop for pedestrians or even large animals, and autonomously brake in traffic at speeds up to 65 mph.

Whether dubbed S-Class Coupe or CL, the big coupe has traditionally been the most lavishly appointed Mercedes-Benz passenger car model and the 2015 remake won’t break that tradition.  Among other things, it will feature as standard many items otherwise optional on the 4-door.  And options will include the Air-Balance package that can regularly spritz out any of a select group of fragrances.  Forget seat and steering wheel heaters.  The S-Class Coupe will even offer heated armrests, an industry first.

The maker also has partnered with elite audio manufacturer Burmester to offer two customized systems for the 2015 S-Class Coupe.

Measuring 198 inches, nose-to-tail, the new 2-door shares the same overall design language as the 4-door, though it gets a bit more of a sporty treatment, with a blend of convex and concave surfaces, with a high beltline and a long hood whose “powerdomes” hint at the big twin-turbo V-8 underneath.

For the U.S. market, the coupe will be sold as the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S550 Coupe and feature a 4.7-liter engine making 449 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque.  The 2-door will get a more sporty-sounding exhaust than the sedan, Mercedes notes.  And the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system will be standard equipment.

Pricing is expected to be announced closer to autumn 2014 when the Coupe goes on sale in the U.S.
