Mazda is latest automaker coming under the investigative magnifying glass of U.S. safety officials as they look into problems with the brakes on 62,000 CX-9 crossovers built in 2010 and 2011.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration received seven complaints of unexpected loss of power-assisted brakes, although no crashes have been reported.
According to the complaints, owners noticed a reduction in the effectiveness of the brakes and requiring more effort to press down the pedal. Some also noted a hissing noise when applying the brakes.

Mazda is cooperating with the investigation, which will determine if the problem is large enough to warrant a recall.

The CX-9 has been subject to scrutiny before. NHTSA investigated the leaks on the master cylinders of the 2008 CX-9. It ended the probe in April 2012 after it was determined the leaks would be unlikely to affect brake performance.
