Toyota is hoping to attract buyers with a fun city carcalled the Aygo, built in partnership with PSA.

Toyota is clearly hoping that potential buyers will have some fun with the new Aygo city car set to debut at this week’s Geneva Motor Show – but you’ll have a chance to decide based on these images that leaked out a bit ahead of schedule.

The second-generation Aygo continues to share its underlying platform with Toyota’s French partner PSA – which markets two versions of its own as the Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108. (Both of those also getting updates this year.)

The underlying design theme for Toyota was “J-Playful,” the maker hoping to make the Aygo more fun to drive than the typical econobox.

While built with French maker PSA, the styling of the Aygo is heavily influenced by Japanese youth.

“What I wanted to make was a car that stands out in a Japanese way, in order to capture the imagination of customers all-around Europe. So I let myself be inspired by today’s Japanese youth-culture,” explains Chief Engineer David Terai.

The reality is that all three versions share the majority of their underlying parts and components, so a key challenge was to visually differentiate the Toyota Aygo from its European siblings.  Among other things, it gets distinctive front and rear fascia.  There’s also an X-shaped bumper, with sharper headlamps and, in the rear, blade-like taillamps.

Like the original model launched in 2005, the 2015 remake continues to be offered in both three- and five-door configurations, as well as a fabric-top convertible.

In terms of powertrains, there will be several gas and diesel options, including a mileage-minded 1.0-liter three-cylinder offerings.

The new Aygo – as well as the Peugeot and Citroen models – will continue to be assembled in the Czech Republic.
