Dodge comes up with an unusual lease program for its Charger and Challenger models.

The new Dodge “Double-Up” deal is offering Charger and Challenger customers a chance to get two vehicles out of one lease.

The move appears to be meant to give some momentum to the two Detroit muscle cars which have been struggling to gain ground on traditional segment leaders Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. It also helps clear out an inventory backlog as Dodge prepares to roll out updated versions of its twin performance models.

The Double-Up program lets a buyer lease a 2014 Dodge Charger or Challenger and then come back, a year from now to swap out for a 2015 model.

“If you have your eye on a new Challenger or Charger, there’s no need to wait for the new model to arrive,” Dodge Brand President and CEO, Tim Kuniskis, said in a recent release. “The Dodge Double-Up program lets you drive today’s Charger or Challenger and trade to the 2015 with no increase in payment.”

The better part of the deal is that motorists will be able to get into either the 2015 Charger or Challenger for the same price as their current lease on a 2014 model – and get a $1,000 in cash on top of that should they prefer to purchase a 2015. The lease for the new models will run for three years.

The downside is that the Double-Up deal excludes the top-performance version of the two muscle cars, the Charger and Challenger SRT. Meanwhile, customers will have to stick with the same dealership and finance the deal through Chrysler Capital, the maker’s lending partner.

The idea of a one-year lease is itself rare in the auto industry but parent Fiat Chrysler struck a deal with Enterprise to take all the 2014 models off its hands when they come back a year from now.  Like a number of other rental companies, Enterprise has been expanding its presence in the used vehicle market.

Dodge is rolling out the 2015 Charger and Challenger models at this week’s New York Auto Show. Both are set for mid-life updates that range from modest interior and exterior tweaks to the addition of significant new technologies, such as the latest Uconnect infotainment system.

Meanwhile, Dodge is hinting that it may have other big news for the Big Apple, likely including the return of the formidable Super Bee model that was a force to be reckoned with during the Golden Age of muscle cars.
