The Ford Escape is the most stolen sport-utility vehicles in the U.S., according to a National Insurance Crime Bureau study.

Everyone’s heard of “zero-down” deals for new cars, but in the case of the Ford Escape, it can mean something entirely different: it’s the most stolen SUV in America.

In fact, Ford holds the top three spots on the list – Edge and Explorer are the next – compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB). The organization annually puts together a list, which this year looked at thefts of 2011 to 2013 model-year SUVs and crossovers from 2010 to 2013. The aptly named Escape was spirited away in 1,421 cases.

Sport utility and crossovers, which for the purposes of the report are tracked together, thefts are up 31% during that timeframe. Compact SUVs are twice as likely to be stolen as full-size SUVs, the study finds.

Following the trio of Fords are: Jeep Grand Cherokee, Kia Sorento, Chevrolet Traverse, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Chevrolet Equinox. Overall, 13%, or 2,834, of the SUV and CUV thefts were unrecovered as of March 31, according to the NICB.

These vehicles may have been targeted by sophisticated organized theft rings which dismantle stolen vehicles for parts, VIN switch them to resell to unsuspecting buyers, or export them to other countries. By volume, Compact CUVs and Premium SUVs have the top two highest numbers of unrecovered vehicles with 534 and 507 respectively.

That said, compact crossovers are more likely to be recovered that any vehicle stolen in the group, except for midsize crossovers, accounting for just 8% of unrecovered vehicles. Conversely, premium SUVs are not recovered in 33% of occurrences: the second-highest figure.

“Interestingly, 5 of the top 6 of the top unrecovered classes by percentage are SUVs, including Premium, Compact, Mid-Sized, Large, and Pickup. These classes also consist of some of highest dollar values for all SUV and CUV classes,” the study reported.

The top five states for SUV/CUV thefts were California (3,531), Florida (1,897), Michigan (1,834), Texas (1,686) and New York (1,577).

When examined by core-based statistical area (CBSA), New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island, NY-NJ-PA posted the most thefts with 2,530. It was followed by the Detroit-Warren-Livonia, MI CBSA with 1,701 and the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana, CA CBSA with 1,300.
