Nissan will officially reveal the concept on Monday.

Looking like it might belong in the movie version of Ray Bradbury’s classic sci-fi tale, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Nissan has offered up a teaser image of a new concept sports car that it will soon unveil during an event in Los Angeles.

Promising “all will be revealed” next Monday, June 16th, the Japanese maker hints that what it has in store, appropriately enough, will be “the next chapter in our Nissan story to an audience that has always shared our passion for performance.”

What might that mean? If Vegas bookies were working up the odds, there’s better-than-even money on the likelihood the maker is about to introduce a new virtual concept that should plug into the wildly popular Sony PlayStation videogame, Gran Turismo.

It certainly would seem so considering Nissan has also released a desktop wallpaper image that shows off all the models that have appeared in previous versions of the Gran Turismo series, with an open spot for something new to go into Gran Turismo 6.

If that proves to be true, it would join a growing line-up of major manufacturers who have developed concept vehicles specifically for the virtual world. That includes Volkswagen which, last month, revealed its Extreme GTI Concept, as well as Mercedes-Benz which introduced a Gran Turismo model during its news conference at the annual LA Auto Show.

A look at the new Nissan teaser suggests that the concept began as a radical take on the maker’s already awesome GT-R supercar. The passenger compartment and headlights are almost direct lifts, though the Gran Turismo model gets more aggressive air scoops, both in the front fenders and along the rear wheels.

As much as manufacturers compete in the real world, they’re going to ever greater extremes to deliver the ultimate in performance models for the Gran Turismo game. It provides designers an opportunity to both stretch their imagination and potentially win over fans who eventually might translate their fantasies into reality at the showroom.

Explaining the maker’s own Vision Gran Turismo concept, BMW M Vice President Andreas-Christoph Hofmann suggested, “The car anticipates future racing trends and allows gaming fans even more to experience BMW racing quality.”
