Hyundai's SEMA concept will just nudge past the 707-hp Dodge Challenger Hellcat in the HP race.

Better check the rearview mirror, Dodge, there’s a Hyundai trying to pass your new Challenger SRT Hellcat.

Once again partnering with aftermarket tuner house Bisimoto Engineering, the Korean carmaker plans to bring a customized version of the 2015 Sonata sedan to the upcoming SEMA Show in Las Vegas. And the concept vehicle reportedly will make a hefty 708-horsepower, a small but significant one more than the Dodge muscle car.

And where the Detroit maker relies on a supercharged version of its 6.2-liter Hemi V-8 to create what it is billing as the most powerful factory-built muscle car ever, Hyundai and Bisimoto turned to a downsized four as their starting point.

The good news for Dodge is that the Hyundai Bisimoto Sonata is just a show car, one in a series the two companies have partnered on over the past three years. That includes the even more outrageous, 1,000-horsepower Bisimoto Genesis Coupe that blasted into the Las Vegas Conventional Center for last year’s SEMA convention.

Bisimoto has been building a reputation for cajoling out gobs of power from Hyundai engines, and this year’s flex-fuel prototype is no exception. The tuner started with the 2.4-liter Theta-II inline-four engine. It gets a number of strengthened internal components, including forged pistons, connecting rods and a high-rev valve train, as well as a high-boost turbocharger.

Power is pumped through a beefed up 6-speed manual transmission.

“With a proven and efficient 2.4-liter engine as a starting platform and a sophisticated, sleek, four-door design, the 2015 Sonata was the perfect candidate for this year’s build,” said Bisi Ezerioha, owner and chief engineer, Bisimoto Engineering.

Bisimoto also has given the show car some complementary exterior upgrades, including a front splitter and aero package, a rear wing, 18-inch alloy wheels, and a Burns stainless steel exhaust system. The Sonata then gets a custom laminated body wrap.

Inside, there are new racing harnesses, AEM wideband gauges and a special interior paint from EK Autoworx.

“Outrageous power is nothing without reliability, and it was a firm goal to retain the reliability that Hyundai is known for. After hundreds of hours of testing, failure analysis and prototyping, 18 new products will be engineered and produced in house to produce 708 horsepower from the Sonata.”

Unfortunately for muscle car fans, there appear to be no plans to put the Hyundai Bisimoto Sonata into production, though the tuner will gladly do a custom job for customers with enough cash. For Hyundai, the tie-in is intended to get a little buzz about the performance potential for products more traditionally known as cheap-and-cheerful.

The 708-hp Sonata will make its debut on the SEMA Show floor on November 4th.
