It may best be known for its high-performance sports cars and SUVs, but Porsche is building up an impressive fleet of new battery-based vehicles, including the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid it will debut at the Paris Motor Show next week – its third plug-in hybrid model.
With the launch of the extended-range Cayenne, Porsche will become the only automaker in the world currently offering three different plug-in models, and the only manufacturer marketing one in the luxury SUV segment.
The 2015 Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid will share the stage in Paris with the Panamera S E-Hybrid and Porsche’s 918 Spyder, the first plug-in “ultracar.” The maker also produces more traditional gas-electric hybrid models.
As with the earlier plug-ins, Porsche is striking a balance between efficiency and performance with the new Cayenne S E-Hybrid. While AutoblogGreen is reporting the new model’s electric-only driving range is still to be certified, the publication also notes industry reports suggesting it will be somewhere between 11 and 22 miles per gallon.
As to fuel economy, the Panamera S is rated by the EPA at 16 City, 24 Highway and 19 Combined, the plug-in S E-Hybrid at 23/29/25. The current Porsche Cayenne S gets a 16/22/18, so if the plug-in makes a similar leap we might see something just slightly under the Panamera S E-Hybrid’s numbers.

That said, the German maker is reporting 0 to 60 launch times of 5.4 seconds for the plug-in SUV. It helps that the total drivetrain punches out 416 horsepower, including 95 hp from its electric motor – which is upgraded from the 47 hp in the conventional Porsche Cayenne hybrid. The gas side of the package is a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
So far, battery-based vehicles haven’t exactly charged up the global automotive market, but Porsche notes that 9% of the Panameras it sold worldwide so far this year were S E-Hybrids. And that figure jumped to 16% in the U.S.
“Porsche expects a significant market share for the Cayenne S E-Hybrid as well,” the maker stated in a news release.
Look for the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid to make its official debut on October 2 at he Paris Motor Show. It will reach U.S. showrooms on November 1, and will command a starting price of $76,400 plus $995 in delivery fees.

Porsche has a real CAFE 54.5 mpg challenge with so many excellent high powered models. Customers are going to pay dearly for the technical ignorance of Obama and the EPA. Selling as many hybrids as Porsche can will lower the Ignorance Tax imposed by the ass clowns in DC on U.S. citizens. No other country is the world has such ignorant automotive emission standards of mpg requirements.
