Toyota recalled the 2003-2005 Sequoia as part of an action involving 247,000 vehicles using Takata airbags.

Takata’s defective airbags forced another automaker to recall additional vehicles today as Toyota announced it is recalling 247,000 vehicles with airbags that may rupture. The Japanese maker has already recalled more than 2.2 million vehicles for faulty Takata inflators.

This action follows a series of recalls by several automakers that used Takata’s airbags in their vehicles, including Chrysler, General Motors, Ford, Honda, BMW and others. In all, more than 16.5 million vehicles have been recalled since 2008 due to the faulty airbags, according to Bloomberg News.

Toyota is recalling the 2002-05 Lexus SC, 2002-05 Toyota Sequoia, 2003-05 Toyota Tundra and 2003-05 Corolla and Corolla Matrix.

Some of the problem appears to be related to vehicles in locales with high heat and high humidity. In this case, the vehicles subject to the latest action were sold or registered in south Florida and along the Gulf Coast, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands and other U.S. territories.

In addition to vehicles produced and sold by Toyota, it includes the 2003-05 Pontiac Vibe assembled for General Motors Co. by Toyota at their previous joint operation in California.

Automakers have been recalling vehicles that use the Takata airbags throughout the year. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been studying the issue at length and working with companies to get problem vehicles fixed.

“As a result of NHTSA’s investigation, Toyota and Takata have brought forward new test results that underscore the urgency for owners in high-risk areas to take immediate action to get their recalled vehicles fixed,” NHTSA said in a statement. “At this point, the issue appears to be a problem related to extended exposure to consistently high humidity.

“However, we are leaving no stone unturned in our aggressive pursuit to track down the full geographic scope of this issue. Based on what we find, we will take appropriate action to ensure that all consumers are protected and we are already in conversations with other potentially affected automakers to get them to accelerate their efforts.”

Earlier this year, GM issued a “stop sale” to its dealers advising them to stop selling any 2013 and 2014 Chevrolet Cruze sedans due to problems with Takata’s airbags.

Nissan, Honda and Mazda collectively recalled about 3 million vehicles due to airbag problems that were all linked to manufacturing problems at Takata. It is one of the five largest automotive safety issues in automotive history.
