The 2016 Mazda6 gets a refresh for the first time in four years. The sedan gets an updated front grille, headlamps and new signature wing design.

Mazda’s been making news lately with the Miata as well as its all-new CX-3 small sport-ute, but lost in the shuffle is a quiet, but much-needed refresh of its flagship sedan, the Mazda6.

Introduced in 2012, the new 6 builds on its “KODO” design that came with the car’s introduction. This updated look for the exterior starts with a new front grille and “signature wing design” with new LED headlamps that the industry has been shifting to for several years now. The redo aims to give the new 6 a “deeper, stronger design expression,” according to the automaker.

The look is accented with 19-inch aluminum wheels with high-gloss paint that adopts a darker color that emphasizes the brightness and greater depth of its metallic look. The line-up of nine body colors includes the newly developed Sonic Silver Metallic and Titanium Flash Mica, which was first introduced on Mazda3.

On the inside, the sedan features a redesigned instrument panel based on the Japanese maker’s “Heads-up Cockpit” concept. A freestanding seven-inch center display is mounted on the top of the low dashboard. The Active Driving Display provides vehicle speed and other important driving information, such as that from the advanced safety systems, in real time.

The new Mazda6 uses a suite of advanced safety technologies in its iActiveSense system.

The design team pursued beauty born of the fine mating and unification of carefully produced parts, Mazda said.

“To meet this goal, they boldly evolved the shapes of the instrument panel and floor console, while paying careful attention to the shapes, expressions and use of colors for the parts and ornamentation laid out in these areas,” the make said in a release. “It also includes the adoption of Mazda Connect, Mazda’s next-generation car connectivity system and an Electrical Parking Brake.”

It also affords the driver and passengers a quieter ride with improved sound insulation.

Detailed refinements to dynamic performance include improved sound insulation throughout the body and improved front and rear seat performance. These enhancements yield a quieter and more comfortable riding experience, as befits the flagship model of Mazda’s range of new-generation products.

The new Mazda6 gets a new dashboard, which gives the driver the sense of openness and spaciousness.

The 2016 Mazda6 offer the same 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G direct-injection gasoline engine. Also carried over are the six-speed automatic SkyActiv-Drive and six-speed manual SkyActiv-MT transmissions. Combined with Mazda’s i-stop idling stop system and i-ELOOP brake energy regeneration system, the powertrains deliver the right balance of linear, powerful acceleration, and excellent fuel economy and environmental performance.

Additionally, the Mazda6 is available with the maker’s i-ActiveSense safety controls. The suite of safety technologies includes Mazda’s Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) detects vehicles approaching from the blind spot areas at the sides and rear. BSM also incorporates Mazda’s Rear Cross Traffic Alert function, which alerts the driver when it detects vehicles approaching from either side as the driver backs up.

Available as an additional feature, Smart Brake Support helps avoid frontal collisions or minimize damage when traveling mid- to high-speed.
