The upcoming Geneva Motor Show is going to be one of the busiest ever, with automakers lining up to debut their latest products. And Porsche plans to use its time in the spotlight at Geneva’s PALExpo convention center to reveal two new high-performance models.
The pair includes the anticipated Porsche Cayman GT4, the maker’s first GT model based on a mid-engine coupe. The German sports carmaker has released some details about the new GT4, as well as a pair of shots grabbed while lapping the grueling Nurburgring track. But it’s keeping its second new offering a surprise to be revealed in Geneva.
The new Cayman GT4 is enough to catch one’s attention. Porsche says it turned an extremely impressive seven minute 40 second lap on the ‘Ring’s North Loop. That’s in line with what the previous generation Porsche 911 GT3 was able to accomplish.
Porsche says its goal was to turn the Cayman into “the new benchmark in its segment” with the GT4 launch. To get there, it has made a number of modifications to the little 2-seater. For one thing, it gets a 3.8-liter flat-six engine originally developed for the bigger 911 Carrera S, here producing 385 horsepower.

There’s a completely new front end with a lowered front spoiler and an additional air outlet atop the hood. The Porsche Cayman GT4 also gets a rear wing to increase downforce. In fact, notes the maker, it will be “the only Cayman with downforce at both axles.”
Other aerodynamic enhancements include new side inlets and a rear-bottom diffuser.
The GT4 body will ride 30 mm, or just over an inch, lower than a standard Cayman. And to scrub off speed after a high-speed straight, the new model will be fitted with an “extra-large” brake system.
The new Porsche Cayman GT4 will handle a 0 to 60 launch in 4.2 seconds, according to the manufacturer, and tops out at 185 mph.
Expect to pay $85,595, including destination fees, once it reaches U.S. showrooms.

As to what we might expect to accompany the new Cayman GT4 in the Geneva limelight, several reports out of Europe suggest Porsche also will debut the new 911 GT3 RS. It’s expected to feature a new 4.0-liter flat-six engine aimed at making it a serious challenger for those who might want to split time between road and track.

The Cayman model is definitely the best handling model Porsche sells for mere mortals. As many Porsche owners believe, the 911 will stay the halo model but the Cayman is a driver’s choice even if Porsche keeps the power down so as not to detract from 911 sales.
The hassle with all mid-engine cars is engine access/service. It’s a real PITA but if you’re paying the dealer to perform the work then you can have a lot of driving pleasure with a Cayman, especially the S or GT4.
