The jurors on the World Car of the Year panel have a tough challenge. They have to compare a wide range of products from every corner of the globe. So, it’s probably not surprising the 10 finalists cover a broad spectrum of cars, crossovers and SUVs from mainstream and luxury.
The 75 international automotive journalists who make up the panel also have to fill in several other blanks as they select the top design of the year, the top performance model, the number one luxury car and the World Green Car of the Year.
Sorting through the finalists will take them another couple months, with the winners in each of the five categories set to be announced on April 2, at the New York Auto Show.
The search for the best-of models began last October, and will be further narrowed down to a short list of three models in each of the five categories in time for the Geneva Motor Show next month.

Last year’s World Car of the Year was the Audi A3. But, in a striking victory, the battery-electric BMW i3 wound up winning top honors in both the World Green Car and World Car Design of the Year categories. Porsche collected a trophy with its 911 GT3, the World Performance Car of the Year, while Mercedes-Benz completed an all-European sweep, the S-Class nabbing the title of World Luxury Car.
