The Cadillac CT6 makes its NY debut.
The turnstiles are now open at New York’s Jacob Javits convention center, spinning rapidly as the crowds rush in to check out all the new sheet metal on display at the annual NY International Auto Show.
TheDetroitBureau.com team was on hand for all the unveilings at last week’s media preview, a two-day extravaganza that saw more than two dozen different unveilings. Some of the new models played it safe, others are simply forgettable. But there also were plenty of surprises and significant debuts.

Chevrolet rolls out its new Malibu Hybrid in New York.
Cadillac CT6. The long-awaited flagship sedan will pit the once-dominance Detroit luxury maker up against its toughest German rivals, such as the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Light and loaded with goodies, it will offer a 400-hp twin-turbo V-6 and a plug-in hybrid;

The new Honda Civic Concept debuting in NY.
Chevrolet Malibu. Parent GM also goes after tough import competition in the midsize sedan market with a coupe-like design that picks up on the styling theme of the well-reviewed Chevy Impala. Roomier, more fuel-efficient, better-equipped, and offered with a new hybrid option.
- Honda Civic. The Japanese maker delivered one of the show’s big surprises when it announced plans to launch an all-new generation of the mainstay compact family for 2016. A new turbo engine will be offered – and the Civic Type R will be imported from Europe for the first time.

The 2016 Jaguar XF rides a tightrope during its sneak preview in London.
Jaguar XF. After offering a tease of the new XF during a daring tightrope drive across the Thames River in London, Jaguar revealed an “aluminum-intensive” sport sedan that is lighter, roomier, more powerful and destined to get a lot more attention in its new skin

The new 2016 Kia Optima.
Kia Optima. Unlike sibling Hyundai, the smaller Korean carmaker chose to stay on the styling edge rather than play it safe when updating its own midsize sedan line. Kia has been dropping hints about the new 2016 Optima for months – and the production car delivers.

Lexus debuted the RX450h and RX350.
Lexus RX. This was a breakthrough product when it debuted 17 years ago, and the RX line remains dominant in the mid-lux crossover segment today. The new model is slightly larger, better equipped and much more aggressively styled. Hybrid RX450h remains available for 2016.

The Lincoln Continental will return in production form.
Lincoln Continental. The other big surprise at the NY Auto Show. While only a concept car, the model unveiled in NY will return as a luxurious production car targeting not only imports like Mercedes, but also the new Caddy CT6. The focus is on elegant, v “aggressive” styling.

The McLaren 570S
McLaren 570S. The latest entry from the British maker anchors its new three-tier product strategy, the P1 ultracar at the opposite end. With its turbocharged 3.8-liter engine, the 562-hp supercar will take on the likes of the Porsche 911 Turbo model.

The Nissan Maxima with CEO Carlos Ghosn.
Nissan Maxima. The 2016 sport sedan has been “reimagined and re-energized,” the maker suggests, with a more sporty and distinctive design influenced by the Nissan GT-R supercar, a lighter and more rigid platform, and an updated V-6.

Porsche trims the Boxster down to its basics.
Porsche Boxster Spyder. The German maker gets back to basics with this stripped-down version of the Boxster. Want a radio or air conditioning? It’ll cost you extra, but most buyers likely won’t opt for those heavy accessories, aiming for maximum performance from the 375-hp flat-six.
The Subaru STI Performance Concept.
There are other notable offerings at the 2015 New York International Auto Show, including an all-new version of the Mitsubishi Outlander, as well as the Subaru STI Performance Concept. We’d likely have added the latter model to our 10-Best list if there was any chance of seeing a production version of this BRZ-based sports car. Sadly, there isn’t. But the good news is that Subaru’s performance arm, STI, will be ramping up its presence in the U.S. in the coming year.
