The 2013 VW Jetta is one of 420,000 vehicles recalled by the automaker for an airbag problem.

No automaker is immune to airbag problems it would seem, as Volkswagen announced a recall of 420,000 vehicles to fix a problem with the wiring related to the device.

The problem stems from an issue with the steering wheel clock spring. If the spring becomes covered or “contaminated” with hair or other fibrous materials it can cause “a displacement of the guide loops.”

If the loops are moved out of their normal position, this can cause tension to be applied to the internal flat cable, possibly tearing it and cutting the power to the airbag rendering it inactive.

The vehicles impacted include:

  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen CC
  • Certain 2010-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Eos
  • Certain 2011-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Golf/GTI
  • Certain 2010-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Jetta
  • Certain 2011-2013 Model Year Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
  • Certain 2010 Model Year Volkswagen Passat (German Production)
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Passat (U.S. Production)
  • Certain 2010-2014 Model Year Volkswagen Tiguan

Should the cable tear and the electrical connection to the driver’s front airbag is lost, the airbag monitoring indicator light should illuminate.

If the airbag monitoring indicator light on a vehicle affected by this recall lights up, Volkswagen is instructing customers to contact their nearest dealer immediately to get the vehicle repair. No injuries have been reported as a result of the problem, the maker said.

For owners of vehicles with no warning lights, VW will notify owners of the problem and set up times for them to take their vehicle to a dealer to complete the repair.
