For the first time, the Camaro 1LE package will be available on V-6 and V-8 models.

For those hoping to squeeze even more performance out of the Chevrolet Camaro, the bowtie brand is bringing back its 1LE package.

Set to make a debut at the Chicago Auto Show this week, the Camaro 1LE option will be offered on both V-6 and V-8 versions of the muscle coupe. The package provides a combination of increased handling, extra performance and a more sporty appearance with a signature matte satin black hood.

The 1LE is meant for “an owner who wants a daily driver and a weekend track car,” suggests Paul Edwards, U.S. vice president in charge of Chevrolet marketing.

Chevy will officially debut the 1LE package at this week’s Chicago Auto Show, but it’s giving an early sneak peek.

For V-8-powered Chevrolet Camaro 1SS models, the 1LE package adds standard magnetic ride control, a segment-exclusive electronic limited slip differential, Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, standard Recaro seats and a new performance data recorder. There’s also a new dual mode exhaust system.

The 1LE package comes with a distinctive satin black hood, but most exterior tweaks improve aero.

The 1LE package will also be available on two V-6 models, the Camaro 1LT and 2LT. Here, buyers will get a more aggressively tuned version of the stock suspension, standard Brembo brakes and Eagle F1 tires. The Recaro seats and performance data recorder are available as options.

There are a number of body updates, as well. For one thing, the front marker lights are replaced by intakes for the new air curtain system. There’s a unique front splitter and other revisions meant to both reduce drag and simultaneously increase high-speed downforce.

“The Camaro 1LE packages follow a recipe any track-day enthusiast will appreciate,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. “Start with a lightweight, stiff structure and then add higher levels of suspension stiffness and damping, more aggressive tires, higher downforce, more powerful brakes and more cooling.

Other details include a suede steering wheel and short-throw shifter. Both V-6 and V-8 models get the distinctive satin black hood.

Chevy first developed the 1LE package back in 1988 to help make the Camaro more competitive in the Showroom Stock road racing series. Only four cars were built with the package that year, another 111 in 1989. The 1LE name was retired after the 1999 model-year, though it returned with the fifth-generation Camaro in 2013.
