Nissan continues to broaden its efforts to expand its footprint in the lucrative American truck market by unveiling the 2017 Nissan Titan at the New York International Auto Show.

After hitting bottom during the 2008 2009 recession, truck sales have steadily climbed and General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler have earned profits from their truck lines and Nissan, as well as Toyota, have taken up the challenge over the past new offerings.

The Titan XD, Nissan’s answer to the heavy-duty pickup trucks sold by the domestic companies.  Prices for the gasoline version will start at $35,290 plus the $895 transportation charges.

The Titan unveiled in New York sits on a separate frame that is 14 inches shorter than the Titan XD, which reduces the length of the Titan’s wheelbase by more than a foot. However, the cab for both the dimensions of the cab in the Titan and Titan XD are identical.

The 2017 Titan will be powered by a 5.6-liter V8, producing 390 horsepower, which is also being used to power the Titan XD.

However, Fred Diaz, Nissan vice president, said the Titan and Titan XD are two different trucks developed for different uses.

“Titan shares Its aggressive style with the Titan XD but the two vehicles are completely different underneath the skin,” said Diaz, who is also general manager of Nissan’s North American Truck Business.

“Titan will compete in the heart of the full-size pickup segment – the half ton – while the Titan XD provides a unique solution for customers by bridging the cost and capability gap between traditional half-ton pick and full-size heavy-duty pickups.”

“Between the Titan and Titan XD, we will cover about 85% of the full-size truck market,” Diaz said.

Diaz, however, emphasized the two trucks are distinct. “We’ve said before even the lug nuts are different,” he said.

“What’s important is that these trucks are servicing a completely different type of customer,” Diaz said.  “I am thrilled to be getting this truck into the lineup as an option for fleets as well as for the personal use buyer,” he said.

Diaz said Nissan expects to put the 2017 Titan, which is built at the company’s plant in Canton, Mississippi, on sale in the U.S. next fall. Like the Titan XD will be available in five different cabs; 4×2 and 4×4 configurations, three different bed lengths and five different trim levels to offer customers are broad selection from which to chose.
