Britain’s luxury carmaker Aston Martin is just coming out of a long sleep, with a pocketful of new capital helping it set in motion the most aggressive product roll-out in its 103-year history.
And we’re getting a peak at what’s coming with a first look at the new Vanquish Zagato concept coupe. As the name suggests, Aston has turned to Italian design house Zagato for the show car making its official debut this weekend at the exclusive Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este on the shores of Lake Como this weekend.
“We pride ourselves on our strong partnership and the creation of the Vanquish Zagato Concept was a true shared experience,” Zagato’s CEO, Andrea Zagato, said in a statment. “It represents the essence of an important design relationship that dates back over 50 years.”
Indeed, the new Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato is the fifth design the Italian house has done for the British marque. The Aston Martin V12 Zagato concept revealed at the same Concorso in 2011 won wide praise and the show’s Design Award for Concept Cars and Prototypes — while also setting the stage for the latest show car.
The two share some key themes, though the latest concept model is a bit more muscular and sensually sculpted, with twin air extractors on the hood framing a pair of sharp creases flowing off the coupe’s nose. The roof subtly bulges above each of the four passengers’ heads.
In the rear, the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato features a retractable spoiler, along with “bladed” taillights said to evoke the brand’s Vulcan hypercar.

Chrome strakes flow rearward from just behind the front wheels, capping twin air exhausts from the concept car’s wheel air curtains.
The greenhouse atop the lightweight carbon fiber body gracefully tapers inward, creating distinctively muscular rear “shoulders” an a classically large C-pillar – though that approach, combined with a relatively narrow back window likely limit rear visibility.
Inside, the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato concept features contrasting read-and-black leather. The sports seats are sculpted to keep driver and front passenger firmly in place during even the most aggressive driving. A “Z” is woven into the quilted material on both the seats and doors.
The show car’s instrument panel retains familiar Aston cues but gives the overall cockpit a much more modern feel than the dated Vanquish of today.

What plans Aston has for the Zagato concept aren’t being revealed, though the use of the Vanquish name strongly suggests the prototype will have a direct influence over the new sports car we’ll be seeing in the near future.
Under its muscular hood, the show car features a 6.0-liter Aston V-12 making 569 horsepower. In production, the next Vanquish is expected to be powered by a new drivetrain derived as part of a partnership between Aston Martin and Daimler’s Mercedes-AMG performance subsidiary.
The debut of the Vanquish Zagato comes only a few months after Aston revealed the new DB11 at the annual Geneva Motor Show.
“We aspire to make the most beautiful cars in the world,” declared Aston CEO Andy Palmer.

If the new Vanquish Zagato concept car is any indication of what’s coming from Aston Martin, that boast should be taken quite seriously.
