Tesla's Bioweapon Defense Mode may make its cars the best weapons yet against a terrorist attack.

It’s often joked that when the world ends, the only thing that will survive will cockroaches.

Apparently we can add Tesla owners to that list too!

The Model S and Model X, which are known for superior performance, including Ludicrous Mode, now have something new: Bioweapon Defense Mode.

That’s right … Elon Musk may have the ultimate weapon in the war on terror: a super-duper advanced HEPA filter!

After putting the filtration system to the test on California’s smog riddled highways and byways and filtering out enough nastiness to allow drivers to perform surgery in the car’s cabin, the company’s engineers took things to the next level.

A Model X was placed in a large bubble contaminated with extreme levels of pollution (1,000 µg/m3 of PM2.5 versus the EPA’s “good” air quality index limit of 12 µg/m3), then the engineers closed the falcon-wing doors and activated Bioweapon Defense Mode.

“In less than two minutes, the HEPA filtration system had scrubbed the air in Model X, bringing pollution levels from an extremely dangerous 1,000 µg/m3 to levels so low as to be undetectable (below the noise floor) by our instruments, allowing us to remove our gas masks and breathe fresh air while sitting inside a bubble of pollution,” the blog said.

Not only did the vehicle system completely scrub the cabin air, but in the ensuing minutes, it began to vacuum the air outside the car as well, reducing PM2.5 levels by 40%.

“In other words, Bioweapon Defense Mode is not a marketing statement, it is real. You can literally survive a military grade bio attack by sitting in your car,” Tesla said.

The new blog entry from the California-based biohazardo- er, electric vehicle maker didn’t mention the soon to be released would also enjoy Bioweapon Defense Mode. However, the aforementioned Musk in a recent tweet did say Tesla 3 owners would get the next best option: Ludicrous Mode.

The Model 3 will do zero-to-60 in less than six seconds, Musk noted at a recent Tesla event; however, no word on how much faster it will go in Ludicrous Mode or how much it will cost – it’s a $10,000 add-on for the Model S and Model X.

In Ludicrous Mode, the Model S does the sprint in just 2.8 seconds. How is Ludicrous Mode the next best thing to Biodefense Weapon Mode? Well, if you can’t sit through it, perhaps you can out run it!

No word yet on whether or not “Launch Mode” will have dramatically different meaning for Musk mavens.
