The 2017 John Cooper Works edition Mini Clubman puts out 228 horsepower and 258 ft-lb torque.

The brand that showed “small is beautiful” has been playing a different tune lately, the newest additions to its line-up suggesting “bigger is better.”

And that goes for power and performance, as well as interior space when it comes to the new John Cooper Works edition of the 2017 Mini Clubman. The JCW model gets what the maker is describing as a “motorsport-inspired turbocharged four-cylinder engine” that pumps out an impressive 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, the highest-performance engine Mini has yet offered.

“Performance and versatility are part of our DNA and our heritage,” said Thomas Felbermair, vice president of operations in the Americas region for the British maker. “So, naturally, there has always been a plan to bring the John Cooper Works variant to the Mini Clubman model.”

The turbo-four can be paired to either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed Steptronic automatic. Power is then directed to all four wheels. The JCW Clubman can launch from 0 to 60, according to Mini, in eight seconds, thanks to a 25% boost in available torque. And, to maximize performance, there’s a traction-optimized Launch Control system.

The latest version of the ALL4 all-wheel-drive system routinely channels power to the front wheels for maximum mileage, but can quickly shift torque wherever it is needed.

To scrub off speed, meanwhile, the JCW Clubman comes with unique Brembo brakes featuring fixed four-piston calipers up front.

Other distinctive features include special body work, a JCW-tuned suspension and other tweaks special to the performance model.

The John Cooper Works Clubman sits 0.4 inches lower than other versions, enhancing not only its appearance but lowering the car’s center of gravity and improving aerodynamics.

Buyers can choose from a stock sport suspension or opt for the Dynamic Damper Control that rapidly adjusts itself to both road conditions and driver input.

Standard features on the 2017 Mini JCW Clubman include LED headlights, Park Distance Control, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, a touchless access system for the split rear doors and driving mode selector.

There are several unique exterior finishes available just for the JCW model, including the Rebel Green paint and red contrasting roof and mirror caps.

Inside, the five-seat Clubman gets done over with standard John Cooper Works sports seats and Dinamica suede-like fabric. There’s a leather-wrapped JCW wheel, stainless steel pedals, sill plates and gear shift lever.

On the safety side, the JCW Clubman gets a collision warning system with low-speed emergency braking. That can be upgraded to include a suite of safety features such as active cruise control, high-beam assistant and road sign detection. There’s also an optional Head-Up Display, or HUD package.
