Want to unleash your inner Demon? Dodge says it will cost you $84,995.

As it gets closer to launching the newest version of its muscle coupe, the Detroit automaker is revealing more about the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, starting with its price. The $84,995 figure — which is about $20,000 more than a 707-hp Dodge Challenge Hellcat — includes both delivery charges and the $1,700 gas guzzler tax.

But a closer look reveals that it will “only” get you the 808-horsepower base version of the Demon, which made its splashy debut at last month’s New York International Auto Show. If you want to unleash the full 840-horsepower version, you’ll need to spend another $1 for the “Demon Crate,” which adds some key performance accessories.

In fact, Dodge is offering a number of key accessories for the 2018 Demon for just a buck. That starts with the Crate package, which gets a buyer such things as two narrow front-runner drag wheels, a recalibrated, performance powertrain control module, a conical performance air filter, and a Demon-branded tool kit and carrying case.

Other $1 accessories include

• A front passenger seat – useful for street driving, as the stock Challenger Demon only comes with a driver’s seat.
• A rear seat, available in either leather or cloth; and
• A trunk carpet kit.

“Eighty-five thousand dollars is not just a number in a business case to Dodge; we know it’s a lot of money and a significant up-charge over a Challenger Hellcat,” said Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Cars for Fiat Chrysler Automobile’s U.S.-based brands. “We worked very hard to build as much value into the Challenger SRT Demon as possible – features, performance and exclusivity that simply can’t be duplicated with a goal of maintaining, and possibly even growing, as much future value as possible.”

For those who somehow missed the splashy New York event – including its smoky burnouts, Dodge is billing the Demon as the fastest factory production car ever produced. With that $1 crate option it can launch from 0-60 in a blinding 2.3 seconds. It also covers the quarter mile in 9.65 seconds, according to National Hot Rod Association certification, passing through the traps at 140 mph.

Dodge officials bragged about the fact that the NHRA has banned the 2018 Dodge Demon from the drag strip. The real story is that anyone looking to race the beast will have to add some other features, including a rollcage, to be permitted on the track.

A couple other interesting details: you’ll feel a full 1.8 Gs pushing you back in your seat during full acceleration. And the most powerful factory production V-8 ever allows the Demon to do a wheelie, the first factory muscle car ever to accomplish that feat, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

To help new owners tame the Demon, Dodge is rolling in a one-day session at the Bob Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving, at Firebird Raceway, outside Phoenix.

According to the Guinness Book, the Demon is the only car to do a wheelie out of the factory.

The Demon is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Though it started out as the same powertrain found in the 707 hp Dodge Challenger Hellcat, it has gone through an extensive reworking to deliver all the added power – and then hold together after some aggressive track runs.

Dodge officials told TheDetroitBureau.com there’s actually an opportunity to bump the numbers up even higher but, for the moment, that’s as far as they think they can go and still offer a relatively traditional warranty for the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, the coupe coming with a three-year/36,000-mile limited vehicle warranty and five-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain coverage.
