GM is expanding its Maven Gig, which is aimed at freelancers, offerings in San Francisco.

General Motors’ newest mobility service, Maven Gig, is spreading its wings on the West Coast by opening operations to San Francisco.

Created specifically to provide vehicles for independent, freelance driving jobs or “gigs,” such as GrubHub, Instacart, Roadie and ridesharing services, GM launched Maven Gig in San Diego last month as part of growing portfolio of car sharing and mobility services.

“Freelancers in the sharing economy want flexibility and Maven Gig is a seamless way to maximize opportunities,” said Rachel Bhattacharya, director of Commercial Mobility Strategy for Maven. “If the driver has a lull on one service they can easily flip to another and keep hustling,” she said.

In San Francisco, freelancers can use Maven car for all of their driving gigs, added Bhattachaya, who added GM also plans to begin offer the Maven Gig service in Los Angeles a bit later this year.

During the San Francisco launch of Maven Gig, the Chevrolet Bolt EV is available for rental with free charging at EVgo stations for a limited time and users of the serve can also opt for a Chevrolet Cruze, Malibu or Trax, she added.

Like many other car- and ride-sharing services, Maven is based around a smartphone app.

Bhattacharya also noted the Maven Gig’s future looks promising. By 2020, an estimated 43% of the U.S. workforce will be made up of freelance workers as nature of employment is changes. Maven Gig is a “nimble platform” that will grow and adapt with the shift, she said, noting it serves as a singular portal with access to vehicles that can be used for multiple services and varied assignments.

Gig drivers typically drive for more than one app throughout the day; Maven Gig is platform agnostic to allow drivers to switch between several brands, services and gigs.

Maven Gig members can reserve a Chevrolet Bolt EV for $229 per week plus taxes, which includes insurance – minus deductibles, maintenance, unlimited miles and free charging at EVGo stations for a limited time.

Bhattacharya, however, noted that Maven business model continues to evolve as it expands. It also will adjust offerings based on a driver’s needs.

Maven has maintained on-demand service in San Francisco for nearly a year and 1 million users have logged 20 million miles of driving. Maven’s sales pitch is that it can free users from the cost of owning a car by offering access to a fleet of vehicles of varied sizes through a car-sharing app used on smart phones.
