The Camaro Turbo will get the high-performance Chevy 1LE package for the first time for 2019.

In a truck-centric market, it takes some work to keep sedans and coupes fresh, and nowhere is that more true than when it comes to high-performance muscle cars. With that in mind, Chevrolet is introducing a host of significant updates for the sixth-generation Camaro as it preps for the 2019 model-year.

That includes a distinctive front end for the SS model, as well as the first-ever pairing of Camaro’s optional turbo engine with the 1LE performance package. It joins existing V6, SS and ZL1 1LE combinations.

“The restyled 2019 Camaro reaches even higher with more of the design, technology and choices that customers want,” said Steve Majoros, Chevrolet’s marketing director for Cars and Crossovers. “It’s a performer with few competitors and a pillar of Chevrolet’s energized car lineup.”

If you get a sense of déjà vu checking out the new Camaro SS face, no surprise, it appears that Chevy was stung by the looks of the “Bumblebee” model from the most recent film in the Transformers series. It gets the new “Flowtie,” a version of the familiar Chevy bowtie logo that has been engineered to actually help improve airflow through the grille. And there’s a functional air extractor atop the hood, as well as aero-enhancing air curtains and unique headlamps. Both the tail and taillamps have also been revised.

The Camaro SS gets a Transformers-influenced front end update for 2019.

All versions of the 2019 Camaro – except the ZL1 — get some front-end tweaks, however “including the fascia, grille, LED dual-element headlamps and reshaped hood,” Chevy notes.

At three years in since the gen-6 Camaro made its debut, some styling tweaks are a necessity. But, unlike what we often see with a mid-cycle refresh, there are plenty of functional changes, as well.

Most notable is the launch of the Camaro Turbo 1LE which shares the customized chassis already available on the V6 1LE package. That includes Chevy’s FE3 suspension with large diameter stabilizer bars, front and rear, specially tuned damper and other modifications, a Brembo brake package and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Other performance enhancements include engine, transmission and differential coolers, as well as launch control and a no-lift shift function. We’ll wait for a chance to drive the new Turbo 1LE package to see how well the new electronic sound enhancement system works. It’s intended to give the turbocharged package a more muscular, resonant exhaust note.

Inside, the package includes a sueded flat-bottom steering wheel and shift knob and optional Recaro sports seats. There’s also a Driver Mode Selector with Sport and new Track Modes, as well as Competition Mode which provides an assortment of performance-oriented readouts and shift lights.

The Camaro RS also gets some front end tweaks.

Mechanically, the big news for the Camaro SS is the new availability of a 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters first introduction on the ZL1. It also gives a driver custom launch control and line lock.

Options for the 2019 Camaro include Forward Collision Alert, as well as a Rear Camera Mirror – first introduced on the Cadillac CT6 – which improves rear vision, especially if there’s someone in the back seat.

All versions of the 2019 Chevy Camaro will also get the marque’s updated Infotainment 3 system which, among other things, allows over-the-air, or OTA, software upgrades. A 7-inch color touchscreen come standard, with an upgraded touchscreen, as well as navigation, available.

Chevrolet will reveal pricing closer to the official launch of the 2019 Camaro later this year.
