the 2019 Maxima, Nissan's flagship sedan, gets a mid-cycle refresh for 2019.

While some automakers are leaning out their sedan lines – even abandoning them entirely, in the case of Ford – Nissan continues to bet big on four-door models, with two critical updates for the 2019 model-year.

While we’ve already seen and driven the Altima makeover, we’ll have to wait until next month and the Los Angeles Motor Show to get a first good look at the 2019 Nissan Maxima, the Japanese maker’s most sporty sedan offering.

Actually, Nissan has given us a first peak at the new Maxima, and not in the usual form of a carefully lit and cropped teaser. The accompanying picture pretty much reveals all we’d need to know about the 2019 refresh short of any taillight and rear bumper revisions.

The 2019 Maxima is a mid-cycle refresh, so we’re expecting virtually no changes to exterior dimensions and, as you can see here, the sedan carries over the swept-back floating roofline and makes only the most subtle tweaks to Nissan’s signature V-Motion grille. The most significant updates come with the new, more slit-like headlampss which feature segment LED bulbs framed inside V-shaped running lights  There are also new air intakes on either side of the grille.

The 2019 Nissan Maxima will share the advanced safety tech also added to the 2019 Altima.

Spy shots we’ve seen suggest the rear fascia also goes through some minor revisions, with new quad exhaust tips and slight changes to the taillights marking the 2019 Maxima update.

Inside, we’re expecting to see only minor changes to the instrument panel and infotainment system.

As with the Altima makeover, the new Maxima is expected to get the Nissan Safety Shield 360 package, with even base models very likely to get the full complement of features. (They’re only available on higher trims on the Altima line.) These are likely to include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot warning, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. A sensing system can also detect when a driver might be getting tired and call for a break.

ProPilot Assist, a system that helps a driver stay firmly planted in the center of their lane, also is likely to be offered, at least on some 2019 Maxima trim levels. The system does not permit hands-free driving for more than a few seconds, however.

Nissan isn’t offering up many details for the moment, but the updated Maxima is expected to retain the familiar 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 300 horsepower and 261 pound-feet of torque in the current version of the sedan. The CVT transmission from the ’18 Maxima is also expected to carry over.

We expect to find out more when the 2019 Nissan Maxima makes it debut at the LA Auto Show a little more than a month from now.
