Manufacturing notable vehicles such as the Tiguan crossover and the Jetta sedan, Volkswagen is one of the most popular automotive companies in the world.

Are you considering purchasing an extended warranty for your Volkswagen? In this review, we examine Volkswagen’s extended warranty plans and how these plans compare to other leading warranty providers.

Volkswagen Extended Warranty: The Basics

A Volkswagen extended warranty exceeds the 4 years/50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper factory warranty, which comes with every new Volkswagen. The extended warranty offers added protection for up to 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. There are also third-party companies that offer similar plans.

Below are the three companies our Reviews Team recommends contacting for a quote. If you’re considering an extended service plan, it’s wise to get a minimum of three price quotes before making a financial commitment.

What Does A Volkswagen Extended Warranty Cost?

The cost of a Volkswagen extended warranty depends on several factors, including your vehicle’s mileage, age, and model. In general, the more miles your car has and the older it is, the more expensive your extended warranty will be.

For example, an extended warranty for a 2000 Volkswagen Golf with over 100,000 miles will cost much more than a 2020 Volkswagen Jetta with 10,000 miles. Based on online forums we reviewed, the cost of a Volkswagen extended warranty might be somewhere between $1,800 to $3,500.

Should I Purchase A Volkswagen Extended Warranty?

It depends on your individual situation and personal goals. For example, if you can afford a very costly repair, then it is probably not worth it. If you cannot afford a costly repair, purchasing an extended warranty could be a smart decision.

We recommend that you read our article on whether extended car warranties are worth it to help make your decision.

Dealership Or Third-Party Extended Warranty

While Volkswagen’s extended warranty plans are comprehensive, our review team believes that third-party warranties are a better choice for our readers.

Third-party extended warranties are generally more affordable while providing similar benefits to a dealership warranty. Dealership warranties cost more money than third-party extended warranties because they have greater name recognition than third-party extended warranty providers. One advantage of purchasing an extended warranty directly from Volkswagen is that you get Volkswagen replacement parts whenever your vehicle needs a repair.

However, when comparing Volkswagen’s extended warranty directly to reputable extended warranty companies such as CARCHEX and Endurance, it is not worth the additional cost.

CARCHEX and Endurance tie or beat Volkswagen on four extended warranty comparison categories:

  1. Maximum length of coverage
  2. Number of coverage plans
  3. Repair network
  4. Accessibility of free quote

Provider Maximum Length of Coverage Number of Coverage Plans Repair Network  Accessibility of Free Quote
Volkswagen 10 years/150,000 miles 3 Only Volkswagen dealerships Must call dealership for quote
CARCHEX 10 years/150,000 miles 5 Any licensed repair facility Free, customized quote online
Endurance 20 years/200,000 miles  5 ASE-Certified® repair facilities Free, customized quote online

What Is A Volkswagen Factory Warranty?

A factory warranty covers your vehicle from costly repairs for a limited amount of time or miles. Volkswagen’s bumper-to-bumper factory warranty for vehicles manufactured before 2020 is 6 years/72,000 miles. Starting with its 2020 models, Volkswagen’s factory warranty will only be 4 years/50,000 miles.

As compensation to new Volkswagen owners for its relatively worse factory warranty, Volkswagen is including two years of factory-covered maintenance for regularly scheduled services.

While Volkwagen’s factory warranty is helpful for new owners, it will expire fairly quickly. For Volkswagen owners who find peace of mind in longer-term warranty protection, they will need to consider an extended warranty plan for their vehicle.
