Acuras are powerful and fun to drive, and owners can trust the Acura warranty to keep their cars in good shape for the first few years. Of course, the warranty doesn’t cover everything, and it doesn’t last forever.

We’ll cover the specific terms that make up Acura’s warranty in 2020. When the limited warranty expires, you might want to consider an extended warranty. We’ve reviewed a number of the best extended car warranty providers, and we recommend a few companies like CARCHEX, Endurance and CarShield. Find a plan that works for you by comparing quotes from multiple providers.

A Closer Look at Acura’s Warranty

As you can see in the chart above, the coverage list is pretty long. The Acura warranty covers a few more parts and systems than many other factory warranties, like replacement exhaust components. However, the coverage terms aren’t the longest in the industry.

For example, the Kia bumper-to-bumper warranty covers 5 years/60,000 miles, and Kia’s powertrain warranty lasts for 10 years/100,000 miles. Next, we’ll look at Acura’s coverage in detail.

Bumper-to-Bumper and Powertrain Warranties

When considering car warranties, two of the most important types are bumper-to-bumper and powertrain. As the name suggests, the bumper-to-bumper warranty covers almost any mechanical or electrical part on a car. It will repair or replace parts defective in material or workmanship.

Bumper-to-bumper warranties, like Acura’s new vehicle limited warranty, are exclusionary contracts. That means the contract lists the items it doesn’t cover to define the warranty. Here’s what Acura’s bumper-to-bumper warranty excludes:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Cleaning and polishing
  • Fluids (unless part of a covered repair)
  • Window glass (unless defective in material or workmanship)
  • Cosmetic items
  • Expendable maintenance items

This warranty also covers a few more parts under different terms:

  • Batteries for key fobs and remotes are covered for six months.
  • Original wiper blades are covered for six months.
  • Wheel balancing and alignment is covered for 1 year/12,000 miles.
  • Air conditioner refrigerant is covered for 2 years/24,000 miles.

Acura’s powertrain warranty covers the heart of the car – the parts that make it run. Here’s what it covers:

  • Engine: All internal parts plus external parts like the timing chain and valve covers
  • Transmission and transaxle: Internal parts plus the case, powertrain control module and more
  • Front-wheel/rear-wheel drive: Housings and all internal parts, plus joints, hubs and more

Coverage also includes seals and gaskets on each part of the powertrain. Acura’s powertrain warranty is standard fare compared to competitors. You’ll start to see differences if you compare Acura’s factory warranty to an extended warranty. Some extended powertrain warranties don’t cover seals and gaskets. Others might only cover internally lubricated parts of the engine.

Are Brakes Covered Under the Acura Warranty?

No, brake pads are not covered under Acura’s warranty. If you purchase other brake components from an Acura dealer, like brake calipers, those can be covered for 3 years/36,000 miles under the replacement part warranty.

Does Acura’s Warranty Cover Paint?

No, Acura’s warranty doesn’t generally cover paint. However, if you notice a paint imperfection or chip immediately after purchasing a new Acura, you should contact your dealer right away. Acura acknowledges that new cars can receive minor damage from transport.

Under the rust perforation warranty, Acura will repair holes that have rusted through from the inside and repaint body panels to match the rest of the car. However, Acura won’t repaint the entire car just to exactly match the paint color.

Also, paint chips and surface rust caused by road hazards or environmental events are not covered.

Is Acura’s Warranty Transferable?

Yes, secondary owners can enjoy most of Acura’s warranty as long as the term limits are still valid. The exception is the rust perforation warranty, which only applies to the original owner.

Emergency Repairs

Another nice part about the Acura warranty is that it allows emergency repairs to be performed at other repair facilities. If your car breaks down more than 50 miles away from an Acura dealer, you can take it to another certified shop for repair. Acura will honor the warranty and pay the shop. Not all factory warranties allow this type of repair.

What Acura’s Warranty Does Not Cover

Beyond the exclusions listed under the bumper-to-bumper warranty, there are a few more things that Acura won’t cover:

  • Misuse, abuse, accidents or environmental events
  • Lack of maintenance
  • Improper installation
  • Failure from low fluid levels
  • Damage caused by racing
  • Vehicles with altered odometers
  • Vehicle modifications or third-party accessories
  • Salvage vehicles

Also, be aware that Acura’s warranty does not cover damaged or flat tires. New tires are covered by the tire manufacturer, not the car manufacturer. New Acuras can come with tires from a number of the top manufacturers like Michelin and Yokohama. Your warranty booklet has contact information for these companies, and your dealer can tell you if the tires are covered as well.

Lastly, Acura’s warranty doesn’t include roadside assistance or any type of free maintenance program. Other companies like BMW offer some free maintenance, and a number of manufacturers include roadside assistance with new cars.

Acura Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) vehicles receive one extra year of powertrain coverage and two extra years of bumper-to-bumper coverage. Both of these warranties begin at the in-service date and expire at 100,000 miles.

Here’s what the warranties look like:

Acura Warranty Coverage Terms
Bumper-to-bumper 6 years/100,000 miles
Powertrain 7 years/100,000 miles

All other factory warranties are still available as long as the terms haven’t expired.

Consider an Extended Warranty for Your Acura

While Acura’s warranty is comprehensive, chances are you won’t use it much during the first few years of ownership. But as your odometer passes 70,000 or 100,000 miles, you could encounter expensive repairs.

You can get an extended vehicle service contract from Acura or from third-party companies. Most reputable providers will offer a range of coverage options. You could extend bumper-to-bumper coverage similar to Acura’s factory warranty for many more miles.

When you enjoy driving, it can be a drag to take your car into the shop. Extended warranties can come with perks like rental car coverage and towing allowances to make the process easy. Plus, you won’t have to negotiate with the shop on price – the contract provider will do that for you.

Acura Repair Costs

According to the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM, Acura vehicles have average reliability compared to other brands. The study looked at problems in three-year-old vehicles and found that Acura drivers reported a similar number as the industry average.

Acura is the luxury division of Honda, which is known for its low repair costs. According to RepairPal, Acura drivers pay about $501 per year on average for maintenance and repairs. That’s a bit lower than the industry average.

Here are a few repairs drivers have encountered:

Acura Repair Cost
Fuel tank replacement $1,250–$1,372
Knock sensor replacement $331–$408
Fuel filter replacement $441–$492

Comparing Acura’s Extended Warranty to Third-Party Providers

Acura’s extended coverage option is called Acura Care®️. The range of plans includes bumper-to-bumper coverage and basic powertrain coverage. It’s available while your Acura is still within the factory warranty and can cover up to 120,000 miles. Acura Care® coverage also comes with roadside assistance, trip interruption and rental car reimbursement.

Acura Care provides as many coverage options as you would need. However, you can’t add the plan after your factory warranty of 4 years/50,000 miles has expired. You also have to go to Acura dealerships for repairs (unless it’s an emergency).

Many third-party warranty companies can match Acura’s coverage while providing more freedom. For example, CARCHEX extended warranties can cover up to 250,000 miles. Coverage can also be added long after the factory warranty has expired, and drivers can visit any mechanic certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence for repairs.

Third-party contracts can also include different perks. Endurance warranties come with a one-year membership to Endurance Elite, which provides:

  • ID theft protection
  • Concierge service
  • Roadside assistance
  • Rewards and discounts on retail and dining
  • Key fob replacement
  • Up to $5,000 in repair financing
  • Two replacement tires per year
  • Endurance Protect app

Even though repair costs aren’t as high for Acura as for some other brands, an extended warranty can still be worth it even for peace of mind. The important thing is to get quotes from multiple companies and compare coverage options available to you.
