Neighbors That Care was formed to help first responders battling the coronavirus.
As the impact of the coronavirus pandemic continues to grow, this news outlet has brought you the details about the latest efforts by the automotive industry to deal with it.
We’ve covered the plant shutdowns, virtual auto shows, vehicle warranty extensions, revised financing plans and efforts by makers to produce much-needed medical equipment, such as ventilators, respirators, face masks and more.
Now it’s time to write about one more effort — ours. We’ve started an initiative called “Neighbors That Care,” which aims to help first responders get the help they need with life’s everyday tasks while they are on the front lines battling this crisis.
“Neighbors That Care” launched as a resident-driven initiative in a tiny but close-knit Detroit suburb, working with the charitable Pleasant Ridge Foundation to provide food and other resources to the community’s many first responders.
It quickly became apparent that similar efforts were needed across the United States. It was equally clear that while millions of Americans remain under shelter-in-place orders, there is a strong desire to reach out to support the first responders who are putting their own lives at risk to keep us safe.
We are not here to fundraise. Our mission is to encourage and assist in efforts to set up similar programs across the country. We also encourage groups setting up their own first responder outreach programs to alert us so “Neighbors That Care” can spread the word and provide a link back. We also want to hear from those who may have supplies, such as masks and other medical gear available for first responders and others.
