The new Mercedes C63 S Coupe comes with two V-8 engine options, one of which propels the two-door from 0-to-60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

There was a time when Mercedes’ AMG models were as rare as the proverbial hen’s teeth. These days, however, it’s rare to find a model line that doesn’t get the AMG treatment.

So, it’s likely going to surprise few to see the three new AMG models headlining the German automaker’s big display at this year’s New York International Auto Show. Mercedes-AMG is giving its special touch, this time around, to three C-Class models: the C63 sedan, coupe and Cabriolet.

“The AMG C-Class is our best-selling model series and therefore a key cornerstone of our company’s success in recent years,” explains AMG CEO Tobias Moers. With the launch of the C63 versions, he adds, there are now a full dozen different C-Class variants in the Mercedes line-up.

Each of the new AMG models features the traditionally hand-built V-8 engine, here displacing 3.98 liters. There are two different versions of the engine, alternately rated 469 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, or 503 hp and 516 lb-ft. Depending upon the package and body style that will get you from 0 to 60 in as little as 3.8 seconds. All variants rely on a 9-speed AMG Speedshift transmission which punches power out to the rear wheels.

The new AMG C63 S Coupe offers power, comfort and technology.

That wet-start double-clutch gearbox allows double-declutching in Sport and Sport+ modes. Overall, there are five driver-selectable modes for a wide range of vehicle functions.

An electronically controlled limited-slip differential helps improve traction and vehicle dynamics. Meanwhile, speed-sensitive steering aims to give more precise control and better feedback to the driver.

Visually, the C63 models feature the same basic proportions as more mainstream versions of the C-Class. But they add AMG-style radiator trim with vertical louvers in high-gloss chrome, updated fins in the outer air inlets, and an A-wing design to the front bumper that gives the AMG models a wider and more planted appearance.

From the side, there are sporty new skirts and what AMG describes as “aerodynamically optimized light alloy wheels. And from the rear the AMG C63 trio adopt new, twin tailpipe trim, an updated diffuser and new rear air curtains to improve air flow.

There’s also an AMG Aerodynamics package that features a sportier front splitter, a spoiler with an integral Gurney flap, modified side skirts and more.

Overall, designers aimed to strike a balance between optimal aero, weight and brake cooling, the automaker explains.

AMG is more than just muscle, as becomes apparent inside. That includes leather and microfiber-trimmed front seat covers and trim in both natural ash and brushed aluminum. Upgrades include a range of colors for Nappa leather seating. And a Designo package adds such luxurious touches as diamond quilt stitching.

There’s an optional digital display, but both instrument clutters allow the driver to call up an array of AMG-specific information, including engine warm-up status, a G-Force meter, the status of settings for an array of vehicle systems such as transmission and suspension, as well as a race timer.

There’s also a sporty – and much more grippy – steering wheel with a heavily contoured rim that’s flattened at the bottom. The wheel also has new Touch Control buttons for operating the infotainment system and other vehicle settings.
