The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of 15 different models covered by the new FCA recall.

Fiat Chrysler is recalling 4.8 million sedans, utility vehicles and pickups due to a problem that could prevent drivers from shutting off their cruise control, making it difficult, though not impossible, to stop a vehicle.

The problem is the latest in a series of large recalls involving the third-largest of the domestic automotive manufacturers, FCA recalling millions of vehicles over the last several years for issues as varied as transmission problems and fire hazards.

The latest service action involves a wide range of products produced for the 2014 through 2018 model-years, and even one 2019 model, and is meant to cope with a cruise control circuit that could short out.

The problem can be occur when a vehicle is operating under cruise control and then accelerates to maintain its speed while climbing a hill. That could trigger a short circuit. If that happens, cruise control locks on and cannot be disabled, either by hitting the on/off switch or tapping on a vehicle’s brakes.

A driver would still be able to slow the vehicle down by shifting into neutral or by aggressively braking, though that could extend the distance needed to stop which, in an urgent situation could cause a collision.

The Chrysler Pacifica is also covered.

FCA is advising owners of the vehicles affected by the recall to immediately stop using their cruise control until repairs can be made. The automaker will be issuing a formal recall notice in the coming weeks and repairs will be made at no charge.

Despite the number of vehicles covered by the recall, only one incident caused by the defect has been reported, and there are no reports of injuries. Manufacturers, facing increasing pressure from government regulators, have put in place monitoring systems designed to catch such problems earlier than in the past. And where repairs might have been made on a case-by-case basis in the past, automakers are frequently now issuing broad recalls as soon as a problem is discovered.

A total of 15 different Fiat Chrysler products made in the U.S. and Canada are covered by the new recall. They include;

• 2014-18 Dodge Charger sedan

• 2014-18 Dodge Durango SUV

• 2014-18 Dodge Journey crossover

• 2014-18 Jeep Cherokee SUV

• 2014-18 Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV

• 2014-18 Ram 2500 pickup

• 2014-18 Ram 3500 cab chassis

• 2014-18 Ram 3500 pickup

• 2014-18 Ram 4500/5500 cab chassis

• 2014-19 Ram 1500 pickup

• 2015-18 Dodge Challenger coupe

• 2017-18 Chrysler Pacifica minivan

• 2018 Jeep Wrangler
