President Donald Trump is like a dog with a bone when it comes to General Motors and CEO Mary Barra today again taking swipes at the company and its product strategy as well as Barra herself.
On an appearance on Fox News, Trump said the company’s focus on shifting to electric vehicles is poorly conceived and won’t work.
“They’ve changed the whole model of General Motors. They’ve gone to all-electric. All-electric is not going to work … It’s wonderful to have it as a percentage of your cars, but going into this model that she’s doing I think is a mistake,” Trump said.
GM plans to introduce 20 new electric vehicles by 2023. The move is designed to help it meet regulatory mandates in China, the world’s largest EV market, as well as U.S. emissions and mileage rules in the future.

Trump also expressed his frustration with GM and Barra – calling her “nasty” – due to its recent announcement that it plans to close five plants and let go of 15,000 employees between the plant closures and an earlier announced effort to thin out its white-collar ranks.
The move drew the ire of Trump, politicians in Michigan, Ohio and Maryland and the UAW. In an attempt to calm rough seas, Barra meet with politicians in Washington D.C. to attempt to explain why the company was doing it, and also what it has done to create jobs as well.

Trump wasn’t happy about the news or the attempt to placate politicians afterward. “To tell me a couple weeks before Christmas that’s she going to close in Ohio and Michigan – not acceptable to me,” Trump said.
He further suggested that the replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement makes it “very uncomfortable” for GM to build cars outside the United States. Trump signed a new trade deal with Mexico and Canada on Nov. 30 to replace the NAFTA, but that deal has not been approved by the U.S. Congress.

Trump did offer some encouragement for the Ohioans near the Lordstown plant slated for closure to Fox News’ Harris Faulkner. “Ohio is going to replace those jobs in two minutes.”
