The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S Coupe set a new record for SUVs on the Nurburgring.
Few automakers take their basic products and tweak them to excess the way Mercedes does through its partnership with AMG. The latest is the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 unwrapped in New York.
The automaker describes its newest small SUV as a “stylish all-rounder with racetrack genes.” That description is apt as its newest small ute set a new record at the Nurburgring for its category. The GLC 63 S Coupe ran the famous track in 7:49:369.
It bested the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio by 2.4 seconds.
Beating the record isn’t necessarily a shocker as the new ute comes with a massive eight cylinder. Available as base and S model variants: the AMG model comes with a 4.0-liter V8 twin turbo engine generating 476 horsepower and 497 pound-feet of torque for the base. The S variant puts out 510 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque.

With that kind of power emanating from under the hood, it’s no surprise that it’ll run the 0-to-60 sprint in about 4 seconds and 3.8 seconds respectively. The top speed of the base model is 155 mph (electronically limited, with the AMG Driver’s package 168 mph), 174 mph for the S models.
Both are paired with the MCT nine-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. The impressive driving dynamics are based, among other things, on the AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with adaptive damping adjustment, the electronically controlled differential lock, which is now also standard on all variants, and the dynamic engine mounts, which are part of the standard equipment on the S models, the company notes.

The AMG GLC 63 S Coupe's interior is the ultimate mix of sport and technology in its class.
The exterior gets just a light touch up for 2020. On the front, the grille is now wider along the bottom and the LED headlights have been shaved down a bit. The rear of the ute gets new taillights with a more squarish look. The S Coupe gets new matte Iridium Silver trim, including on the rear diffuser. The models come standard with 20-inch five-spoke wheels, although a 21-inch upgrade is available.
The interior comes with a choice of Magma Grey fabric with Black Nappa leather and yellow contrasting topstitching to go with the flat-bottomed steering wheel. The steering wheel can be customized to the driver, wrapped in a variety of materials.

Both the base and S Coupe come with five driving modes available; however, the S Coupe also comes with a sixth mode: “Master.” Since it’s a Mercedes, it’s also got to have all of the interior nicities, and in this case the driver can “Hey Mercedes …” just like the other models. Both versions go on sale in the United States in late 2019. Pricing information will be released closer to launch.
